Kia Carnival Platinum 2016 RHS Mirror

Help! I was reversing my 2016 Kia Carnival Platinum and knocked my RHS mirror so hard it broke the hinge/base.
Went to smash repairs and they quoted me $2300
Said there were no after market spares and that new spare was $2200. Mainly cos it has fish eye camera, several internal motors, indicator etc. they said it comes as a whole piece.
Anyone know where I can scavenge for 2nd hand or scrap parts for my Kia carnival?
Or any advice on what to do?

  • You could possibly call the wreckers. I hear they wreck cars and sell the parts.

Second option is to buy a written off carnival from the auctions with a good mirror, remove the mirror, and resell the rest.

Who are these wreckers you speak of?

30 seconds on google you'll discover that the 'series' (YP) of the kia carnival hasn't changed Since 2015, so when you're calling around to wreckers, you can ask for anything betweeen 2015 and 2020. Ideally you want to find the same colour, to save painting it. The fading might cause it not to match exactly, but it'll be the same if you do a fresh paint job.

Look on gumtree for a backyard smash repairer. Assuming you can get the mirror for ~200 from a wreckers, it should only be another $100 in labor to install it.

  • nope…
Have you spoken to Kia perhaps? Would be interesting what a dealer says?

  • Couldn’t you just claim it on insurance?

Don’t have comprehensive. Only 3rd party fire n theft.

Out of interest what drove the comprehensive vs 3rd party insurance decision here? The car is still worth $25k+?

        • paid comprehensive for a good 10 years initially and came to the conclusion that I never claimed. So decided to switch to 3rd party fire n theft to save money being an Ozbargainer. So for the second 10 years all has been well till now. Still ahead in absolute dollar terms.

      • Don’t have comprehensive.

Oh lordy….. Fix that right now!

        • Why. They have self insured their own car.

          • @brad1-8tsi: Oh, you must be new here……

            Why

Just look at the endless 'not at fault' only have 3rd party insurance, other party doesn't have insurance threads that pop up at least once a week now.

The OP car is worth $25k, little too much to gamble on isn't it?

            • @JimmyF: Insurance is a product for those that can't afford the loss of their own property, vehicle, livelihood, mobile phone, etc .

The OP has insured themselves for the "what if you hit a Mercedes / Ferrari / McLaren" scenario and feels comfortable with self-insuring his own vehicle.

I don't comprehensively insure our $6k Honda because they want $2500 premium because of the 2 P-Platers that drive it. If they have a bingle I'm comfortable that the TPPD insurance that costs $650/yr is all we need.

Rene Rivkin had millions of dollars worth of vehicles. He was rich enough that he self-insured all of them.

                Which is fair enough,

But the OP has a $25k+ car and honestly the 'hassle' of being without this car if a uninsured driver hits you, is going to be a pain in the butt and not worth any of the savings, let alone spending months trying to get some money out of them.

Uninsured drivers are about to sky rocket over the next 12-18 months. I wouldn't risk it at the current point in time on a car valued at that amount being used as a daily driver.

Depending on feature set the list price is between $1300-$2200 for a complete mirror assembly. You will then need to have it painted and installed. You may also need to calibrate radar sensors/cameras if they are mirror mounted so might be worth the $500-$1000 to go through insurance and get it all sorted properly (maybe go through Kia dealer so they can sublet and program everything on the one bill?).

    • You’re right. I forgot about the blind spot detection it’s built into the mirror too!

      • That's just an extra light in the mirror. The blindspot detection is most like a radar system under the car.

  • An you get a lower spec one without the camera etc and switch the base?

What about getting the base 3D printed?

Pretty sure if you google around you can find something:

    • Thanks this looks promising

BEST ALL TIME OPTION FOR OP

Pay attention to ALL sides when reversing!

    Otherwise it will happen again

I dont like your chances at the wreckers as there wont be many of your model around. And whats more, wreckers know the price of these mirrors so dont expect to get it on the cheap.

The only other (perhaps) viable noption is to claim on your insurance and pay the excess if its not much.

    Good luck!

How does that help Op now?? What a pointless comment. Everyone is an expert with hindsight. And I am sure you have never damaged anything in your life by accident.

Obviously cant read either. OP has already stated in this thread that they only have 3rd party insurance. So, what part of 3rd party is going to pay for their broken mirror.
