Can You Get Zantac (Ranitidine) Anymore ?

i use to take this stuff sometimes as i thought it was better for you than Nexium (or a ppi) then it was recalled last year as it was contaminated with something that may cause cancer. does anyone know if its back? i cant find it. and if it still has the cancer risk?

    Update 2

    2 April 2020

Following further investigation of this issue, the TGA has suspended the registration of all ranitidine medicines. Further information is available on: Medicines: Suspensions from the ARTG.

So no, this medicine is now gone from store shelves

  • does anyone know if its on script? was only some brands contaminated?

  • any pharmacist here? haha. i know ranitidine worked in a similar way to a antihistamine. can you take a zyrtec? haha . is there no other options other than ppi's now ?
maybe i dont know what im talking about other than thay both block H something

    • Just call you local pharmacist and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

Nah, Ranitidine is an H2 Blocker… Loratidine and Cetirizine are pretty specific H1 Blockers.

@Vinni9284 advice is spot on. check with your local pharmacist. You might also inquire as to whether antacids would be suitable for your particular scenario.

    • @tebbybabes is right about them targeting different receptors, and as such not being able to achieve the same action.

There are no other over-the-counter H2 receptor antagonists available unfortunately. You can get famotidine or nizatidine on prescription, both of which are similar, however have supply issues due to the withdrawal of ranitidine from the Australian market. There is some nizatidine stock floating around, famotidine is a lot harder to get hold of.

    Doctor here.

Ranitadine was taken off the market due to it containing too high a level of NDMA.

We have been using famotidine instead

  • I've been using esomeprazole which has been quite effective in dealing with my reflux.

    • but thats a ppi? anythine that ends in zole is prob a ppi.
which i think has been making me anaemic

      • That's right to an extent -zole is also used for anti fungals (i.e. fluconazole)
Long term PPIs 'can' cause iron deficiency anamia - but it's quite rare and only after protracted use

  • Zantac is nothing like an antihistamine and any health professional on here can't legally provide you with health advice, there's not enough information. If something is posted I wouldn't trust it.

I understand it's frustrating when something disappears.

I suggest speaking to your pharmacist or GP, especially the GP, sometimes prescriptions can end up cheaper per dose as they have 28-30days supply, depends on the product though.

    Hope that helps.

    • Ranitadine is technically a 'anti-histamine' - acting on the Histamine-2 receptor predominently in the stomach
OP is asking about the availabilty of an H2 blocker - not for health advice…

  • Pharmacists here :)

Currently no H2 antagonists available in Australia at the moment

    Ranitidine - long term unavailable
    Famotidine - long term unavailable
Nizatidine - possible stock available June 10th but it is likely that the supplier will push this date back.

edit - cimetidine discontinued in Australia

    • Are you sure?

I've been using Famotidine in ED with no problems…

      • yes, just checked the supplier's website. It's unavailable to be ordered until Sept.
Are you prescribing famotidine or administering it in ED? It is possible that there is some residual stock in some pharmacies.

        • Writing it on the med charts - nurses seem to be giving it, perhaps the hospital i work at has stock
