Are You Using WFH Time to Study?

I have been on the fence for many years of furthering my education (or starting one as I last 'studied' in year 12), I have found myself putting it off or making up excuses why I could do it or it was not the right time.

I have been working as a technical consultant dealing with payroll software for 10+ years, 6 weeks ago I moved away from consulting to a client-based role and was looking forward to the perks of life being a bit more relaxing. COVID and JobKeeper have not provided that for me that relaxation yet but hoping things quieten down over the next few weeks now that the processes are in place.

I decided now was the time to do it while I will largely be working remotely for the next few months so I have commenced my Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security using work experience as a qualifier due to no previous university qualifications. The idea is I will progress through this to a Graduate Diploma and then Masters all going well. I know this will not help my progress in my current role but may allow me to (take a step back first potentially) change career paths.

I smashed through some of those free Udemy courses I have been stockpiling in the weeks leading up to this have been beneficial already, not only getting me in the rhythm of studying but also expanding on some of the subjects I will be covering in my first few units.

I wanted to see who else had used this opportunity to upskill, whether it be through areas such as Udemy or more official channels! Share your successes/failures!

  • You should have seen the death stare from an Airline Flight Attendant union rep when a career academic suggested they spend their grounded hours learning about cybersecurity. Top 10 covid moment, for me.

    • Can I ask why it's soul destroying?

      • Following. It a large field so maybe they’re talking about the compliance roles.

I have been stood down and have been using this time to get some AWS certifications. Already passed the AWS Solution Architect Associate exam and now have scheduled AWS Developer Associate for next week. Normally it would take around 2-3 months of study for each exam, not counting the 6-12 months of hands on experience.

I have been studying 4-5 hours everyday and have managed to pass in 3 weeks ( I have 12 months hands on experience). It has also helped me be productive and keep a calm mind with all the ongoing chaos in the world. I think I'll be back to work next month so am planning on giving the exam for the last of 3 certifications at the end of June.

    • Are you in that industry currently?

Sort of..I am a Full stack developer but I work in a very small IT team .So, have to do other things like windows administration, IT support and Office 365 administration. A year ago another contractor moved our application to AWS. There was no training provided, so I started learning myself and got hooked to the cloud and the possibilities.

Eventually I want to move away from programming or at least move to an architect role. This is where AWS comes in, once i have all my associate certifications I'll look for opportunities in the cloud and will start preparing for the professional and specialty certifications.

        • Cool, thanks for the information! Good luck with the study.

    • Thats a great result!

  • Haven't been stood down or laid off but am trying to use the extra time I have to do some Udemy courses (mainly programming stuff). Trying to at least upskill a bit in that area considering there's not much else to do.

Are You Using WFH Time to Study?

I'm using my WFH time to WFH.

    • This is what I was going to say. I feel like I barely have half an hour to an hour to relax each day. No way I'm going to use that time for study

  • Depending on where you live, I think you can do some free courses on TAFE, I only bring this out because theres a short course on Digital Security incase you want to get something in between.

Personally I'm trying to learn two languages, Japanese and Javascript/React partly for fun but would be great if I could work in that direction in the future.

I'm using my WFH time to WFH. Everything takes twice as long with twice the effort.

    • i would say WFH is more productive in some ways - but chuck in the homeschooling for 2 kids as well .. yup.

      • I live by myself and my kids are grown up. lol

The bulk of my current role (pre-lock-in) is going out to our sites (50-90km from home) and looking at assets that are flagged as needing maintenance and working out what parts, equipment and trades we need to do the job. Half of this work should be done by the tradie or trade supervisor but we spoon feed our guys.

At the moment I'm looking at deferred or past-due work to see what has to be done to get them moving again. I have to get the tradies to look for me. The answers I get are less than helpful.

eg: To an electrician yesterday "You raised a job in 2017 that says 2x 12v batteries and a UPS module are needed in the control cabinet at site X. Can you tell me if the job was done. If not, can you give me partnos or dimensions / specs or photos and I'll order the parts and schedule the job."

        Reply: "I dunno."

        • Yeah sounds challenging opposed to someone who just logs into their computer each day ..

But remembering something from 2017 .. I'd be "dunno" as well

@droodle: I can live with "I dunno" providing they finish with "I can go to that site next week/month and have a look." He may as well said "Eff You".

With social distancing regulations and the way we have segregated sites and work teams these guys aren't super-busy. I've only got enough electrical work for this guy until next wednesday. Then I'll try and find a really dirty drain for him and give him a shovel. :-)

  • Does reading a book and self-education count?

    • Comics don't count.
