Redbook Warranty or Carsales Warranty?

Bought a used BMW 2 Series last year 2015 model, having a leaking valve cover gasket and have a suspicion that something else could be going on, as I get white smoke on startup. Possible valve cover gasket or Turbo issue. Common with the N20 engines.

Does anyone have any experience with redbook or carsales extended warranty insurance?

Additional info: Past year had warranty from the dealer, but its due to expire soon. I am planning to claim via them first but they suggested buying extended warranty after that expires.

  • Have you actually purchased an aftermarket warranty or looking to purchase it?

    • Looking into purchasing.

  • Valve cover gasket would cause oil leaks, not white smoke on start up (unless the white smoke is coming from under the "bonut"). Things like worn valve stem seals and turbo seals are more likely the culprit.

And is the smoke a light, hazy blue or a definite white? White could indicate a leaking head gasket (steam and would disperse in air very quickly) or a sticky injector (unburnt fuel and slow to dissipate). Is it a diesel or a petrol? On cold startups, diesels are more prone to a puff of white smoke on start up.

And you want to buy the insurance now and then claim on it when you already know there may be an issue??? Kinda sounds like fraud to me, but good luck, as these insurance policies usually cap the cover to $1,500 per issue and $10,000 total. So, if your turbo is shot, it may be $3,500 to replace it and you're still out of pocket $2,000… read the PDS, that's why it exists.

Look at you go. Pretending to know what your on about. Pffffft. 😉

      • LOL… Go me…

On that note, I read the intro page for Carsales Warranty (because OP cant use a computer, nor read and wants some idiot sucker like me to TL;DR it out for them…)

"Comprehensive" cover is a waste of time and money. It covers *drum_roll.mp3* "Suitable for cars under: 5 years and 125,000km", which almost every manufacturer covers under their warranty these days.

Basic is capped at $3,000 per claim and standard is $5,000. So, an engine replacement could be anywhere up to $12~$15,000, but they will only pay $3~$5,000.

        Policy Exclusions

        • for a mechanical failure which existed prior to or was caused by a condition which existed prior to the policy issue date
        • diagnostic or dismantling costs unless accepted as part of an authorised claim
        • repair of oil leaks caused by gasket or seal failure

        and then…

How do I make a claim?

If a claimable event arises You must:
        1. Take Your Vehicle and Your Proposal & Policy Schedule to any Duly Authorised Mechanicor repairer authorised by Us.

And for what it is worth (because OP cant use a computer) the "Redbook" warranty page just diverts to the Carsales warranty page (probably because Carsales owns Redbook??) And a nice Clickable Link to the PDS, because I'm not sure OP can cut and paste…

        • @pegaxs, thanks for your help :) Comprehensive Extended Manufacturer Warranty says the Market value of the car, as my car is still under 5 years old. The only fault I am aware of at the present moment is the valve cover, which I am already having repaired. The white smoke when I asked my dealer said it was condensation. I am just cautious, that if something does go wrong like is know with my engine. I do appreciate your taking the time to read through the information for my benefit.

          • @silllybugger: What I was mainly after was if anyone had precious bought insurance via them how the experience was. Thanks in advanced :)

    • Valve Cover repair quoted around $400, its less than my excess so having that done externally. Just worried the smoke is something more than condensation and might want to invest in insurance before something worse goes wrong, on a silly purchase.

      Couldn't agree more now.

  • White smoke on initial start up and take off is valve stem seals.
Check your mirror after car has been idling for a minuite or so and you then take off. Doesnt have to be fast.

Valve stem seals is Big job.
If your BMW was doing ithis when you purchased the car then dealer must fix depending on the wording of the warranty

I seen a 4 years old Kia Carnival with 50,000kms doing this.
Owner admitted they missed a few services….OMG!

  • I don't think that the 3rd party warranties will cover you. I have had dealings in the past with another provider. These warranties are not worth the paper they are written on generally (my claim covered $300 of $20k of repairs after emails and heartbreak). Also they won't want to cover something that was pre-existing. You need to factor in the cost of the policy against what it may cover also as mentioned previously.

To me white smoke is likely head gasket or coolant entering the engine somehow. I would spend the money and get a mechanic to look at it, unfortunately cars cost money to run and maintain and you might be stuck with those costs.

  • What ever happened to carsale warranty now? they have ceased to take on new policies because of current conditions?

    Any alternative options?

  • Keep your money in your pocket. Save for repairs. You’ll be in front.

Aftermarket warranties will cost you a lot, won’t pay for more than a certain amount per claim ($3000 is common), have a lot of exclusions and you’ll likely have to get servicing done at more expensive places and if you are late for a service they will decline your claim.

    • Not my car, workmate has a range rover and was told to get extended warranty thanks to its expensive parts list and realiabilty.

I tried to help him, and read that comp would cover up to marketvalue of the car itself in total, and no limit on claim, as long as its serviced in manufacture specs.

He wanted to go ahead and now I can not get it for him, the site isnt taking anymore policies.

Just wanted to give him some options or information on what happened with carsales warranty
