Beware of shipping costs

Hi Fellow Bargain Hunters,

This is a great site which I will be sharing with friends.

Some of the deals posted are not so great… paricularly the one for the Lexmark printer at $25. Seems good on the surface but the cheapest you can ship this item for is almost $20 (for those in the West anyway).

Can someone explain the point system as I’m not sure how you collect points, or even where your balance is stored. I posted this on the welcome thread but have had no responses so perhaps I'll have more luck here.

Thanks.

  • Hi thanratt,

Yes I agree with the shipping cost. The real cost for shoppers is always item price + shipping cost so an item from a shop with high shipping cost might not necessarily be a bargain. We are trying to encourage the posters to always include shipping cost to major Australian cities though. If you spot something that does not include shipping cost, feel free to post them in the comments.

As of the "point system" — sorry not really sure what did you mean. Point for the deal where there is a score right next to the deal posted? You can basically click on the green + button to vote up a deal, or click on the red - button to vote down a deal. The score is basically the number of positive votes - number of negative votes. A deal that exceeds a fix number of positive votes will get promoted to the front page, whereas a spam that gets more negative votes than positive votes will be removed from listing.

Sorry the documentation is still lacking but we are working on it :)

  • Thanks Scotty. I have found out that I can't post negative deals for 30 days. Not sure I understand the reasoning behind this but I'm sure there are valid reasons… I suppose to prevent someone voting negatively unecessarily.

  • Be careful here as shipping costs vary depending on where you are. Voting negative because of high shipping costs to the west, would also mean we should vote negative on deals that are state or city specific. while negative voting is your prerogative, its best used for deals that are fundamentally wrong, and misleading. With the cost of fuel, one persons concept of high shipping is another's saving. Unnecessary negative voting can also turn away others from sharing at all, which we all lose from.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the sharing

  • Thanks for your welcome ozpete. I was aware of that and so wouldn't opt to vote negatively on something like this; that was why I included the fact that the high shipping costs were for those people in WA. I was merely making comment so others in the west were aware.

My comments about negative voting was in relation to another deal where you become automatically subscribed to getting sms. I agree that we need to be careful when voting negatively.

    • Thanratt. Yes i agree with you, I think you have a great handle on the voting/comments system. I look forward to seeing your participation here.
