OzBargain promoting mob mentality

Ok so I just experienced some the the inner workings of this site and wondered what other people thought of the way this site tracks and treats negs.

I negged a deal. Shame on me!

The comment that I have to make in the deal(fair enough site requirement) was downvoted so much (8 people) that my neg for the deal was revoked. I can't vote again, no matter how many times I comment.

Are we that offended by a little red box with a number in it that the site can't let a neg vote stand?

I don't think it is a bargain. I had my reasons and I don't really care what the rest of you think about my opinion. The deal was posted because, in someones opinion, it was a bargain. I disagree, simple right?

But my opinion is not allowed to be heard because it is unpopular. It is in fact 'negged' out of existence. The very same treatment I gave the deal has forever banished my opinion and the small red number that comes along with it.

Now, once again site balance is restored and it's a perfectly good deal again with 31+ and not a single person on this site thinks it's a bad deal at all.

Thank you all for playing nicely in our positively reinforced, mob mentality site where other opinions are not valued and, in some instances, they simply do not warrant being noted.

EDIT
Turns out a negative vote isn't if you think the deal is a bad deal. The positive vote however IS if you think it's a good deal.

There seems to be a different criteria to the positive and negative vote use for the COMMENTS.

Please forgive my confusion.

Comments

          • @cheaplee: I used a descriptor. Okay, not a positive one, but you weren't acting in a positive light. If I was being derogative it would have been not pertaining or truthful to your behaviour.

Please, just address my actual comment instead of picking easy snippets. It's boring and does neither of us intellectual good.

            • @lette: Ok I've addressed your first point already. I've addressed your point about wasting your time.

To address the rest of your post, you negged something that was a bad product. That's really great to show others it's a bad product. The application to my OP in that sense would be if 5 people thought it was a good product and negged your comment about it being a bad product, there goes you neg vote and it is now 100% a good product with nothing but positive votes showing it is a good product and a good deal. Your 'warning/thought's about it being a bad product is no longer valid.

To address your final point, I've just realised I might be able to block these deals from showing based on keywords or something.

              Thanks for the insight

@cheaplee: Yeah, I was going to say you could probably hide flybuys deals from your view.

              • @cheaplee: Fair enough I didn't include myself with my comments on time wasting. My time wasn't included in my mind because I've got too much. I probably shouldn't have generalised it that way. My bad.
I was using my example as a contrast to yours I'm glad you see it that way. I agree with you, but five people probably did see my comments and neg as frivolous and pointless. I actually has a conversation with one and pointed out I was being even keeled and they agree. Because my comments were more than "I dislike this", rather "I dislike this because" others then upvoted me and kept the balance in tact. I put to you there was no reason to upvote your comment because it was from your point of view without context.

No worries. Thanks for the intellectual discussion when the only thing on is studio ten and instant coffee. This morning is not a good morning haha.

  • Aren't we all just trying to help each other out with deals here? Lets not be so sensitive and just keep finding the deals. What someone thinks isn't a deal might be a deal to someone else.

At the end of the day we're not 4chan where our goal is to ruin each others lives through bullying…We just want some Eneloops

I rarely find a good deal first, usually someone else has already. The forums is where the action is at! Haha

  • @OP - total negs JV got on this site will be more than human population on this planet. So learn something from him/her

In response to Fergy1987, yeah we are.

I negged because I didn't actually think it was a deal. I didn't understand that is not what a neg vote is for.

Subsequently I have questioned the logic of the site design behind a positive vote for a good deal and just ignore if you think it's a bad deal.

I did post this in 'site discussion' as I thought it was the most appropriate place to discuss.

    • I didn't understand that is not what a neg vote is for.

And now you do. The end.

      • So we don't discuss how the site works here? We just accept it without question?

I agree with OP that sometimes it makes NO SENSE

I recently negged an ALDI nuts deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/8662907/redir) cause it was found cheaper at woolies + it's the same as Aldi's everyday price anyway

Got banged with negs which revoked my neg smh altho my neg was in line with the website's guidelines

The difference is your neg vote was legit, OPs wasn't.

      • but I still got negged and my vote was revoked …

        • +2

Hmmmm interesting how the site works in that legitimate negative votes are completely revoked due to popular opinion.

Someone should bring this up in the site discussion board for discussion.

    • Because people disagreed with you? You also got a decent amount of positive votes for those who agree with you.

Though many neggers have no logic. I'm changing the product in this example but it's happened a few too many times now: I say I don't like bananas, people neg me and say I'm wrong… because apparently they think they know what I do and don't like.

Don't let the opinions of other people bother you.

I recommend reading some Nietzsche & developing your 'inner Superman' … someone who doesn't care what anyone else thinks, and does not elevate the opinions of other people above their own opinions.

I never go back and see if anyone has replied to any of my comments. I have better things to do than engage in fights with random strangers on the Internet.

I express what I want to say, and that is that, from my side … If anyone agrees, then fine … If anyone disagrees, then that's also fine …

      Thank you

Other people have also commented in a similar vein and others noting I should be able to take the criticism.

My issue was never with the ppl downvoting me. I didn't get my feelings hurt.

My issue was the site removes all traces of a negative vote if enough other people disagree with me.

Why bother having a downvoting button?

      • My issue was the site removes all traces of a negative vote if enough other people disagree with me.

Your negative vote is shown in your account and the votes tab of the deal.

        • +1

I stand corrected. Not all traces, just the easily visible ones

Down voting system is terrible for comments.
Only leads to bullying and dog piling of opinions and views not held by the majority.
There should be up votes only and a report system for anything that is rule breaking.

You see it happen constantly on any deals that have a relation to politics, religion, social opinion and beliefs.
