Looking for Desktop Recommendations - All Advice Welcome! (Budget $600)

Hello!

I am on the hunt for a replacement desktop PC for my mother but neither of us have any tech knowledge.

Would someone be able to suggest a suitable desktop for basic requirements (mainly internet browsing and streaming)? She is interested in an all-in-one but I assume we can get more bang for our buck by buying regular desktop set up or just tower. Is refurbished a good option, or better to start fresh? Anything would be an upgrade from her very old clunky PC but would appreciate any input to make sure it is everything she needs. She is a carer so under $600 would be ideal.

Thanks =)

    Get a Dell Optiplex 9020 from ebay. There's loads of them, ex-office machines that are ~5 years old and fine for basic internet stuff for less than $300.

      ^ Solid option. Ex-gov or similar sounds like a great fit here. Avoid AIO's if you can it's basically a laptop without the mobility and for those price points get ready for pain.

      • Thank you so much - we went with the refurbished Dell and Mum is loving it! Would anyone be able to recommend something similar in laptop form for myself? Basic needs - browsing/streaming/can handle The Sims? Would greatly appreciate any advice =)

    Refurbs from Dell Outlet also available, but stocks tend to be limited.

    Any new or recent Core i5 PC will do, preferrably with a minimum of 8GB RAM but 16GB would make it future proof (RAM Can always be upgraded later)
    Core i7 is overkill.
    Dell or HP are the best options

    NOTE: The first number of the chip model number is the generation just so you know. The bigger the number, the newer the chip.
    eg Core i5 2500 is 2nd gen whereas Core i5 3470 is 3rd gen.
    The fact they both run at 3.2GHz is irrelevent. The 3470 is some 20% faster than the 2500.
