Should I Get The 2020 Dell XPS 13?

Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone has got the 2020 XPS 13 and can share your experience?

I'm looking at getting this model:

13.4” Ultra HD+ (3840 x 2400) InfinityEdge Touch Anti-Reflective 500-Nit Display

10th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.9 GHz)

16GB RAM

512GB SSD Storage

Intel® Iris Plus Graphics with shared graphics memory

JB currently has it on sale for $2890. I would be using it for productivity work (always have a lot of chrome windows open), some light gaming (LoL, GTA V maybe), light photography (adobe lightroom), and want to get into light videography too.

Do you think this laptop would be good for this purpose? Hoping to play some LoL and GTA V without the stutter in the graphics. Realise that the new XPS 15 just came out, but pricing will be above 3.5k, so its well out of my budget and have always preferred the smaller ultrabook (because, pretty. duh) types cos I work at cafes a lot (well used to).

Many thanks

This doesn't have a dedicated GFX card, and the extra cost for touch doesn't seem to be worth it for your use case.

  • G14 Zephyrus seems like a better choice?

  • Iris Plus is still integrated graphics. If you're speccing up to the '4K' SKU, then performance and battery would take an even bigger hit. If you want to play games, buy a gaming laptop, not an ultrabook.

Don't get the 4K version. Absolutely shit battery life when compared with 1080P. Waste on a screen size this small anyway. You can thank me later.

  • You might wish to pair this with an external graphics enclosure such as the razer core X if you can handle your gaming and videography available when docked. This should cover most of your needs.

  • Have this exact model which I got as a refurb for 2.1K.

If I had a choice, I would opt for 1080p due to much better battery life. On older XPS models, the 1080p model would usually have a less bright and less colour accurate panel but Dell really upped their game on the 1080p versions since the 7390 2-in-1 last year (which I also owned). I can concur that other than sharpness, you won't be missing out.

Gaming wise, GTA V will not likely be a smooth playable experience on this even with iris plus. If I pair it with my gtx 1060 egpu, I could probably play at 1080p on medium (that's the settings I have for Witcher 3 using the egpu). Be wary though that I have had plenty of driver issues with dell laptops particularly when trying to get it working with my egpu (HP omen accelerator). But when it works, it's great.

    • What battery life are you getting?
