What Tyres Good for SUV?

Hi all, as you know there're tons of brands out these days. Now, one thing I don't skim on is tyres. Just wondering what "proper" brands of tyres would you recommend on an SUV, specifically Subaru Forester in my case? Tyre size is 215/65R16.

What are the general consensus of the best all rounder tyres for SUV in Aus? Mainly just highway & city driving (forget about off road). Being higher ground clearance, stability and grip are important factors. Cheers!

  • Do you want grip or tyre longevity?

Any spirited driving (bit hard in an AWD forester I know)?

    • guess looking for all rounded & balanced one….but no spirited driving..past that now haha

        What’s so funny?

        • Why need to ask? Haha

@Lancerx: What's funny about that? It's not even a coherent sentence.

  • Just make sure the load rating is correct. I see so many SUV's out there with car tyres on them that the load rating barely covers the weight of the vehicle, let alone the weight of the vehicle, plus passengers, plus gear, plus anything else…

The load rating will be on your cars tyre placard.

  • I think you're generally safe with popular known brands. Just avoid no name brands.

I used to fit tyres years ago and there's a very noticeable difference between cheapies and more decent brands. Mostly in the sidewalls that were very thin in budget tyres.

  • We have a 2009 Forester as our family car and 2 years ago fitted Kumho HT51 215/65/16. I came from a background of performance cars with softer compounds and lower sidewalls, so SUV tyres were a new thing for me but I've found these to be very pleasing all-rounders. Great value (paid approx $500 for 4 at KAS with tyresales price beat and then further Amex Cashback on top of that), comfortable and quiet ride, good dry grip, worked well enough when we've occasionally ventured off-road, and a good balance between performance and wear. The weakest point of them has been fast cornering in the wet when they do let go a bit but it's a progressive slide rather than snapping. I'd happily buy them again over what you might consider "proper" brands.

Just as important as the tyres with the Subaru AWD is to change all 4 tyres at the same type, check the pressures frequently, and rotate the fronts/rears at regular 6 month intervals to ensure even wear. Otherwise the differentials will eat themselves and make terrible noises.

    • Yep, made the mistake just changing the front two (actually on advice of the tyre shop, probably wanna save me money), but bad idea. the car wobbles a lot at high speed when front two almost bald.

  • get mycar to price beat!

    • Ah yes, didn't think of that. They do carry few brands too. Would they accept verbal price? For e.g. Could you price beat Bob Jane for $xx?

      • nah, you have to have it in writing.

check your preferred tyre at tryesales, tempetyres, tyroola, bobjane, jax. they will beat all of them. all of those should advertise prices online

Michelin primacy 3 is good in term of price and value.

    • Thanks, but hard to find good value Michelin tyre. Leaning toward good year this time, since they got promo, any take on them?

      • I installed 4 on Toyota Rukus R16 $500 for 4 tyres

        • Wow. thats cheap for Michelin. I take you're over east? WA usually more expensive for starter it seem

          • @Lancerx: From Tempe tyre.
As mentioned below comment, you can ask MyCar to price match Tempe tyre.

            • @SnoozeAndLose: But Tempe is based over east though. They'll do that too here in WA you reckon?

  • What you guys thought of good year efficient grip? Also kumho premium range like KL33 or KL21?

    • What are their price point?

      • Around 160 each for kl33..goodyear still waiting to hear back

        • Did you look at Yokohama much cheaper but not too bad.

          • @SnoozeAndLose: Haven't heard much about Yokohama these days. Any suggestions?

            • @Lancerx: I used AE480(not remember the model) when it was buy 4 get 1 freefrom Bobjane. I remember it was $370 for set of 4 for Mazda CX-5 R16. Lasted about 40k. Grip is good on both wet and dry just a bit more noisy than Michelin's

I recently (last week) installed KL21 225/65/R17). Kumho is covered under mycar tyre care plan. Good tyre so far but too early to say but they do come with 50k km guarantee

      • Mind asking how much you spent?

        • $565 for four tyres including wheel alignment.

each tyre was $190 at mycar. they price beat tempe tyres who had them for $125 each.

          • @khushi123: dam that's cheap..in WA though?

            • @Lancerx: Just find your tyres on those websites I mentioned and get mycar to beat

  • best all rounder tyres for SUV in Aus?

Since you asked, 100% BFGoodrich KO2s. Good on road and great offroad. Tyre of choice for adventurers.

    • Honestly though, I drive on country highways, but almost never offroading..I usually take in law's 4WD for that hehe

This year Wheels used an SUV for their tyre test.

It would be hard to go wrong with the winner from that list.

    • Thanks mate! Now I can rule out kumho.. Shame they don't have good year and dunlop in the mix, always wonder how good they are giving their premium price

      • I replaced the factory Bridgestones with the Toyo from that Wheels list and they were very good.
