  • What's the difference with JBL bar 5.1? They looks like the same.

    • +3

      5.1 + 4.0 (Atmos) = 9.1

      • +4

Technically should be written 5.1.4 though right? The Samsung Q90 calls itself a 7.1.4, which has more channels than this, but the average consumer will think this is the pinnacle of sound technology.

        • may be it can be run as 9.1?

          • @zorrt: No, I read the specs. It's definitely a 5.1 system, but with atmos.

  • +2

I was hanging out for a good deal on the samsung hw-q90r which would come in at a similar price as this deal, although its 7.1.4. I like the idea that this JBL system the rear speakers are completely wireless and just grab them off the soundbar when you are planning to watch atmos stuff. For our situation at least having powered rear speakers would be reasonable annoying.

  • +1

You also receive an extra 4% on ShopBack ! Great deal..
If your looking for a sound bar with plenty of bass , highly recommended

Harvey as in Harvey Norman 🤔

  • +1

Just read about 10 reviews and in the end I took the plunge. I've been looking for something like this, and this is a bargain considering its retailing for US$1K overseas.
I'm a previous owner of the Q90 Soundbar (Chillybags take note) which sounds amazing, but in the end, it just doesn't work. Even with the latest firmware, there are about 100 problems that crop up connectivity-wise every time you want to watch something. So I guess I want something that just works 100% of the time, even if it doesn't reach the sound heights of the Samsung. Main downside of this, mentioned by every review, is it has almost zero sound options (clear dialogue option, music option that actually turns off all the surround funtion - it has one that turns DOWN the surround settings, but not off, which is a problem). Let's see how it goes. Excited.

    • I’ve been looking for the q90r as well - what kind is issues were you having?

      • +4

Sure (and I did exaggerate, it wasn't 100 problems). I was using it with a 2017 LG E-series ARC (but not eARC) OLED. The more minor issue is that the surrounds and/or sub will turn off and need to be paired again about twice a week on average. The firmware was said to fix this, but it doesn't (it just stops it from happening every single day). Note that the re-pair process involves turning off and on again each speaker in a particular order at the mains. The main issue that I couldn't get past, (and this is more to do with different standards for ARC than the soundbar itself possibly) is that the sound would cut out for 1 second about every ten minutes while wathcing (way more annoying than it sounds). It was quite telling when I took it back to JB and the guy was in no way surprised and I didn't even have to say what was wrong with it, he just said "yep, don't worry. We know".

I read all the reviews and trawled through pages of comments on forums about that soundbar and was aware of all the problems, but I got it anyway thinking "surely I'll be the lucky one and it will work fine". But it just doesn't.

On the plus side, watching Fury Road in Atmos when you've got it working is almost better than being in a theatre.

        • +1

Thanks for that! That’s really good insight for me to be aware of. Cheers for giving us your experience

        • +1

It's funny how the "it just works" factor is taken for granted - see my comment about my JBL 5.1 below. I'd read a little bit about the Q90's fussiness but obviously most reviews are extremely positive.

          • +1

@y2k: If you look at user reviews for the n950 and Q90R, it has an abnormally high amount of negative user reviews. It goes beyond the "only people who have a negative experiences go online" Granted, most still won't have an issue. But it seems many did.

Not sure what it is about the n950/q90. Seems like it's had lingering software issues which has carried over. It's interesting that Samsung's other soundbars don't have these widespread issues.

        • +1

Had similar issues myself with the oledc9. Had bought it as a simpler sound solution for my family as they find my main system too daunting to startup with separate components. Tried it on a pana vt60 and it worked fine for a little bit -same with the x9500g. In the end have learnt to live with it.

Went back the hwh751 - no rear surrounds but does the job. The q90r has been relegated to just a simple bar without the rears.

The jbls do sound nice though.. hoping that the rears work better. Might try it out as i have heard that they have deeper low end bass.

      • The Q90R needs a small room. The rear's connection issue started for me when I moved them from 2 metres to 6 metres from the bar.

I have no idea where to place the sub. Next to the sound bar has issues.

The firmware update just keeps the sinc light lit white the rears and sub connect and disconnect at their will.

        Wall mount solution is rubbish.

Sounds great for a soundbar (mid bass is obviously lacking). Keeping, dispite faults, as there are not any real alternatives in this packaging.

    • let us know :) i was waiting for the q90r as i have a qled tv and would prefer it. But if this one is better i would consider it

  • Is the "2.1 Deep Bass" for $412 or the 5.1 for $600 using this code reasonable value? My old man is looking for a sound bar and it's not a market segment I know anything about.

His living area is open plan so bouncing sound off back walls to create rear channels is off the cards (and I'm pretty dubious about that tech anyway).

    • I’ve got the 5.1.

The convenience of having truely wireless tears that just plug into the sound bar to recharge (and give the fronts some extra oomph when plugged in) was great.

However in the end the sound didn’t stack up to my amp and dedicated 5.1 set up (to be expected I guess) so the sound bar is now looking for a home in the family room.

    • doesn't come as $600 for the 5.1 for me using this code. what code are you using? I am getting $749.25.

  • 4k 120hz Video pass through for Series X and Ps5??

    • Yep, it has it.

      • -1

Really 120hz…. Any link. I need to be sure if spending 1k.

  • +2

PSA: If your goal is function over form get a traditional home theatre system over a soundbar. If your goal is small form factor, go soundbar.

    • -1

This is obvious right? No number of tiny speakers will make up for size.

  • Thanks OP,finally a set the wife approved. The wireless rear speakers sold it!

  • +3

I had the JBL Bar 5.1, but it wouldn't play nicely with my LG OLED B8 - after a couple of weeks, the bar would simply refuse to turn on at all. Disconnecting from the mains for a few hours usually would fix it, but obviously I couldn't do that forever. I went through a fairly extensive troubleshooting regime with JBL tech support and they told me to return to the vendor. I took it back to Harvey's (note: the woofer weighs a ton!) and they exchanged it, and the new unit had the same problem. Eventually they gave me a straight refund on the second unit.

Just for troubleshooting I had tried the bar 5.1 with a Sony Android TV (2015) and it worked fine; I then attached my Yamaha YSP2200 to the LG B8 and it also worked fine. Some couples just aren't meant to be.

When it did work, the rear speakers were nice, but I found having to shove them back into the bar all the time to charge a bit of a hassle (I like surround sound, even when it's just normal stereo stuff cloned by the rear speakers, so prob use them more than those who are happy just to whip them out for movies). You can just plug them into Micro USB chargers instead, but you still then have to manually turn them on every time - there's no standby mode.

Because of all that I'm waiting for reviews on the LG SNG11 - that ticks a lot of boxes, even if I think it'll be a long time before I actually use the eARC's ability to take pass through uncompressed Atmos (I don't buy Blu Rays and the B8 isn't getting an eARC firmware update). It also costs far more, so I'll wait around for a 20% eBay sale anyway

    • +1

what's the LG SNG11? When googled, this comment is the only relevant result.

EDIT: Nvm found it, it's SN11RG.

      • +1

Ah, sorry about that! And these components have such memorable names too! ;-)

Yeah, the SN11RG is going for a whopping $1700 or so right now. I've only seen one bloke review it on LG's US website and he wasn't very specific, esp about the effectiveness of its ATMOS.

    • Thank Y2K. Now I'm worried. I have basically your generation of LG OLED too, and I just ordered the 9.1.
Not sure how all the reviews I read failed to mention you have to turn the rears on manually and theres no stand-by mode. Seems worth knowing!

  • Been in the market for a soundbar for a while now! Reviews look good so bit the bullet! Loved the idea of wireless rear :)

    • How long will the batteries last ?

      • rated for 10 hours of use.

        • +1

Thanks . Can the batteries be replaced ?

  • +1

View in person before buying. Looks toy like in person (use the included 'wood grain' panels for full effect).

Samsung Q90R sounds significantly better, but has plenty of issues. If you never listen to either before buying, I am sure you will be happy with the BAR 9.1.

True wireless surrounds are gimmicky and get old quickly. If you don't have a place to put rears, then you don't have a place to put these rears. Putting these wireless rears on top of the couch each time you want surround sound is not a good experience. You will get a better experience squeezing rears on speaker stands between a couch and a wall (rears will still sound directional). Many speaker stands have a channel down the stand to hide the power cable inside and room in the base to hide the connection to an extension cable.

  • So you guys reckon there is an initial batch scheduled for June? Or will all the pre-orders ship in August? I have mailed them asking as well.

    • No idea… hopefully not waiting another 2 months, the US got it over a month ago.
Let us know what you hear.

  • +1

    Reply from Chat

Thank you for waiting. Your order was for the batch to be expected on June 2, 2020. The estimated date on the website is for the succeeding orders to be placed. You may check the status on https://www.jbl.com.au/account, on your order it still shows "Backorder, expected in stock by 02 June 2020".
You may see a tracking number on that tracking link probably by June 3 or 4.

    • This is the response I got for the order placed on 25th May -
As per our product support, it is currently on back order and it is expected to be back in stock on the 8th of June.

      • Cool, well as long as it is June, I'm happy.

    • I ordered on May 17 (day this deal was posted), and chat just insisted that my order will be fulfilled in August due to high demand.. I hope they're wrong though.

      • What does the pre-order date on your order say? June or August? It could be luck of the draw, or, they really dont know and all stock is only coming in August

        • Order status still says June 02 for me… Hope we'll get some clarification soon.

      • They told me August over chat. Later emailed me with 8th June date after checking with their product team.

        • They followed up with product team over email as well and stuck by their August date, and offered me a JBL Link portable in return. When did you make your order?

          • @halbface: Intresting. My order date is 25th May. They gave me 8th July as an expected date, maybe they will push it further. I might cancel it if they push it back to August!

      • In the same boat.. I have yet to touch base… Can't find an email I can contact. Any luck?

  • +2

I have received a NEW update, and according to them, ALL stock is now scheduled for August only.

  • Anyone else get a shipping notification today?

    • +1

I just received my order today.

      • Also received today!

  • For the folks received the 9.1 bar, how's it performing? I have received mine last week but was faulty one - bar doesnt respond to anything, only shows LOAD on the display.JBLis going to sent a replacement when the next bach comes, so another wait for me.
