I’m thinking of getting a Blu-ray player...

Sounds very old school, but I find the movies I want to watch are rarely on Netflix and I end up having to buy them digitally anyway…

So I’m wondering if anybody still buys blu ray (or whatever the latest format is) movies any more?

Is this a good idea? Or is it an outdated and old fashioned tech?

Perhaps you may find a trip to JB Hi-Fi beneficial

    • Having trouble interpreting your riddle.

Any chance to say what you mean :)

I’m new to this whole bargain hunting community.

  • Of course there's people that still buy and watch BluRays. Significantly less than before with the new age of media streaming and creating your own media server collections, but it's available for use and some prefer to collect physical disc copies.

If you have a console like a PS4 at home then you already have a BluRay player than can play movies too.

XBox One and PS4 are 3D bluray players but also have heaps of other capabilities. I can totally understand your desire to have a bluray player as i find the following advantages:

*you actually own a physical product
*you don't have to be connected to the internet to play the movie
*you don't have to have a good internet plan to get a high-quality movie

If you want to really get into it you can get a multi regional bluray/dvd player. This will open you up to the international market on amazon/ebay etc. Some cheap movies (albeit probably not as cheap as a Netflix plan) are available.

Owning physical products is a burden.

I sometimes find that, it is cheaper to buy old movies at local Salvos or Vinnies than buying them digitally.
I watch them on either Xbox One or Bluray drive in PC.

  • Can you rent the movies digitally? Unless it’s an awesome movie I rarely watch a movie twice, and the latest releases are usually available to rent (use Just Watch app to compare prices)

Just buy an XBOX mate, they even play ULTRA HD.

  • Unless you are planning on a dedicated home theater in the future get a 4k BluRay player for the high-quality audio/video processing.
or just get an Xbox which is still adequate.

  • The quality of stuff on blu ray is superior to 4k streaming. This probably has to do with compression and the difficulty in maintaining a constant bandwidth. Id say its definitely worth getting a blu ray player, but consider a 4k blu ray player if you have a 4k TV.

  • Thanks so everybody this was really helpful.

And no, I don’t have a game console so will be looking at buying a player.

    :)
