Turn Ducted Air Conditioner on with Phone

I have a dumb reverse ducted system (in a rental).
It doesn’t seem to have a remote.
It can only be set to turn off at night or turn on in the morning. It can’t turn off after I go to bed then turn on before I wake up.

Is there a way I can cheaply make it so my phone can turn it off and on?
It doesn’t have a brand name on it anywhere.

Gets magic 8 ball out…… Reply hazy, try again.

Who knows, are you in a apartment? Is it a central unit? Post some pictures of what you have. Give us SOMETHING to work with.

If turning on/off is all you are trying to achieve and provided it is plugged to a wall socket get a smart plug
If you need to control other functions get a Broadlink RM device and train it with the IR remote.

If it's ducted, with a standard wall remote thing then they're not IR they're hard-wired

  • Is there any time display on the controller for ducted AC where you set the temperature, cooling/heating mode? If so it should have a timer function.

    • Yes it has a timer but I can only set it to turn off or on not both.

      • How many timers can you set? Based on the ones I have seen, you can set 1 timer to switch AC on, 1 timer to switch AC off.

A ducted system will have a wall-mounted controller somewhere. No doubt this is where you press the on/off button.
Google is your friend. I suggest googling until you can locate the brand of aircon. Then download a user guide to operate the control panel. It should have some instructions on how to program it to turn off after x hours, or turn on at a certain time in the morning.

    • It literally says no brand on it anywhere. It’s so strange. Maybe someone pulled a sticker off at some point.

You can use the phone to press the on/off button but your finger will do the job just as well if not better.

    • Good find, didn't know this existed

    • I did see this but I don’t think mine has a remote receiver to be able to use it.

  • It looks like this

I can’t see a remote signal receiver on it.

    • It resembles the one in my office. Definitely no IR remote but I could set the timer to turn the AC on and off for every week day.

      • I’ll give it another try but last time i couldn’t get it to turn off at say 1130pm and on again at 630am. It’s difficult not knowing the brand to look it up.

  • I turn mine on and off with my iPad through an app called Zaza Control. It seems to work with just about every brand (mine wasn't listed, but there are, apparently, a limited number of configurations…..you may have to try a lot of Zaza's options before you come up with the one that works for you).

    • Cool app but:-

Universal TV Remote-ZaZa Remote can be used on built-in infrared mobile phone such as Samsung, Xiaomi, HUAWEI, OPPO, Lenovo, HTC, TCL.

OP's ducted AC system does not use infrared remote.

  • I had the same problem as you (although live in own house, not rental), and jerry-rigged it by wiring in a dry-contacts smart relay into the control-panel which is controlled by a home automation hub (z-wave). If you havent got any of that setup, then it'll cost you about $300-$400 to do, but there's a fair bit of techie screwing around required.

Sort of documented in my post from 2yrs back. Let me know if you hae any questions.

    • was just reading above that perhaps you could get a remote for your control panel. If so, then you have a much simpler option, there's lots of "aircon automation" solutions out there that pretend to be a remote control and control it for you that way. But i think you need to have a working remote to train those things first.

  • Get a smart thermostat
Honeywell round LYRIC Wi-Fi THERMOSTAT programmable Room ducted heater aircon
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124176699796

    • not gonna work, most japanese ducted use proprietary controller, not a simple rh, rw and c wire that you can hook up like the dump brivis/braemar we usually see

  • Best option is a Google Nest Thermostat — about $330 https://store.google.com/product/nest_learning_thermostat_3r…

Just check if your heating/cooling system is compatible first (https://s3.amazonaws.com/support-assets.nest.com/images/0000…)

    • won't work, nest, ecobee and the like from US only work with systems that uses 24vac controlling wire like braemar, brivis
