Fraudulent Transactions through Uber

Hi all,

In March my Mum was charged a total of $1000 in Uber transactions that were not made by her nor me. She has contacted Uber to resolve the issue but they note that it was related to my account (her card used to be linked to mine, but I have unlinked it already). However, upon inspection of my travel history there were no such trips taken during this period. The staff at Uber noted that the transactions were made on another account with the same name as myself and similar details. I have request for additional information regarding the transactions including the trip details and account details but was only provided with an email address due to privacy issues.

So, I was wondering do I have any rights to further investigate this issue (ie. obtain a full transaction listing and detail of trips taken since it has been linked it my Mum's card.) Uber has not been dealing with my problem efficiently over the past month. Also, are there any other steps I can take to escalate this issue (Fair Trade/ACCC/Ombudsmen).

Note: I have followed up with my bank and they informed me to contact Uber direct to sort it out.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thank you everyone for their comments, I'll follow up with the bank tomorrow morning to investigate this issue. If the bank persists on me discussing it with Uber I will raise the case with AFCA.

    bank deny chargeback?

    • Banks told me they can't do anything about it and I need to contact Uber.

I thought they would have done something about it but I guess not…

If uber don't take action within 2 weeks, call your bank (well your mum will have to) back and dispute the charges.

Why was her card linked to your account?

It’s a fraud situation. Her bank will sort it. Make sure when she calls up, the bank is aware you are disputing fraudulent transactions not Uber just over charging you.

They won’t tell you who made the trips, where they went etc because that is irrelevant

If It’s same name as you and different account treat the problem as Identity theft and figure out the solution from there !

It's strange that the bank won't dispute them. Something is amiss. Maybe they know something you don't? My only guess is your bank is the same bank that uber use?

If her bank won't come to the party and dispute the transactions, you can escalate to http://www.afca.org.au/make-a-complaint

There is a 120 day chargeback window time frame from when the transactions took place, so you might need to do this ASAP.

In the off chance they still don't want to, or the chargeback window time frame lapses, then your goal would be for AFCA to rule in your favour and your mum's bank may need to write it off to pay her back.

You would likely need to prove they were not your transactions though. Eg with evidence or via a stat dec

How does one account spend $1000 in uber? How many transactions were there over what time frame??? I would argue uber's fraud team should have picked it up if it was abnormal spend for the account.

I have request for additional information regarding the transactions including the trip details and account details but was only provided with an email address due to privacy issues.

So they claim you/your mum are liable to pay for the trips, but won't provide you with the details of the trips due to 'privacy issues'??

    • ^^^ This.
If they believe these are legitimate charges they can bill to your (your mum's) account, then they can tell you what the charges are for.

Thank you everyone, Uber just got back to me 1hr ago. They've blocked the account and will also refund us the amount.
