Makita or AEG - Impact Wrench for Garage

So my cheap Chinese made impact wrench finally died after a few months of torture. Now I am looking to buy a set of impact wrench with strong power and good reliability. I have did a lot of browsing and filter out a set if mid-torque combo from AEG and high-torque combo from Makita.

AEG: $299 combo saw it on AEG website and some Bunnings stores

Makita: $769 2 5.0AH combo from Sydney Tools
https://sydneytools.com.au/product/makita-dtw1002rtj-18v-5-0…

I know these two are obviously different grades but I want some advice on should I save some $ and buy the AEG kit or start investing on the Makita system as I may need more tools later on. It would be great if someone can give me some advice on which brand to choose.

I work on my cars a lot and occasionally I come across bolts that are rusted and tight as hell (wouldn't come off unless angle grinder is used since I don't own any powerful rattle gun/impact wrench)
Last time a strut bolt wouldn't come off even with myself jumping on a 3m pipe on a breaker bar…

The Makita one is MADE IN JAPAN which is the reason why I have intention to invest. I won't pay that much for any DeWalt or Milkauwee that is made in china.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

  • If you are doing frequent, high torque work can you stretch to a snap-on product? My in-laws' diesel workshop uses that brand. I'd also suggest Milwaukie fuel range, as I'm a consultant for mine sites and have seen that brand loosen some heavily corroded mild steel sockets in my time.

    • The MX series must have your lot salivating.

    Milwaukee.

    Hands down.

  • Mate, I'm not so sure that the Makita is made in Japan? Every Makita I've bought in the last 5 years have been made in China. Impact Wrenches included.

FYI: AEG, Milwaukee and Ryobi are owned by TTI, a Hong Kong brand that manufactures in China.

That said, made in China is not a indication of quality.

If you are adamant for whatever reason, you will want to take a look at Bosch Blue (made in Malaysia)

I agree there are good products that are made in china but just when I have other choices I would prefer to buy products that are manufactured in a country with better reputation. And I checked a few stores and some top model Makita Skins (incl the impact wrench) are def made in Japan.

  • Milwaukee M18 all the way. Good range of tools and you get access to a stout number of impact wrenches including these two:
    http://images.plebeians.net/_data/i/upload/2020/05/19/202005…

    High and Mid torque wrenches.

Plus the M18 chargers also do M12 batteries, which is a far better form factor platform for 12v than the Makita. So you can then expand to the M12 stubby and ratchet.

    • Emm… Milwaukee is more expensive than Makita overall. I just don't know is the extra cost in the long run (like purchasing batteries and other skins) is worth it. But their 5 years warranty seems to be more promising than Makita's 3 years. But thanks for the advice! I will think about it for a longer while before I make any purchase!

The high-torque combo is like $100 more than Makita's.

We use Makita rattle guns at work and holy shit they are good. Like so good, I don’t even use the pneumatic types any more. But, they are hella expensive for home and huge overkill for doing a few things at home in the garage.

My only gripe with the Makita is the placement of the reverse switch near the trigger, it’s arse about, because I am always bumping it when I use the thing.

Where I do some volunteer work, they have AEG tools, and I’m pretty impressed with them. They don’t have rattle guns, but do have drills and drivers that I am impressed with.

  • Was at the Bunnings desk the other week and a guy come in and he was holding a Makita drill, not sure what the issue was but she said did you want a replacement or your money back, he said this is the second one and she said we’ll just keep replacing them with a laugh, he looked at her a bit weird and followed her to the tool department…
Wished i would have stuck my nose in and said what’s the issue mate because I’ve always been a fan of Makita…

    • I have heard stories about new products from Makita are badly made. That's why if Im buying Makita this time I would only go for the 'Made in Japan' top models. I always see professional and tradies carrying Makita when I was younger. Makita had given me a good image when I was still a kid haha

      • I’m hearing you mate, My Carpentry days were cut short years ago but i always had Makita gear and the boys used to also, Although i did have a Panasonic drill that lasted years… If i was still in the trade I’d probably go Milwaukee gear but there $$$$$

There are issues with some of their tools. My brother in law had to get his drill and drivers replaced twice now, he has now switched to DeWalt as a replacement.

  • Even some HILTI gear is made in CHINA now.

If are happy with ALMOST and you want to buy NOT MADE IN CHINA, get the Mak or Panasonic? etc. I would as well.

But the Milwaukee if you are really after that extra %.

  • You could go with the m12 range of Milwaukee, I have some of the M12 tools and I like them for their form factor as well as power.

  • I have that Makita impact driver, and it'll do absolutely anything on a car/light truck. I usually use the smaller 1/2" one though. It's more than enough tool to do suspension parts etc, and is much lighter/easier to maneuver. For reference I undid a seized sway bar bolt using the small 1/2" one with one hand, that a 1m breaker bar with a hydraulic jack under it wouldn't budge. The big one gets too tiring to haul around, especially in tight spots/above your head with one hand.
