Edited: Fat fingers. Price fixed. Not $90.
Was looking for a kettle bbq.
Weber is nice but way over my budget.
This one looks decent. Ash cup is handy.
Might give it a go.

  • How this compare to basic Weber kettles?

    • +4

My recommendation is go Weber. Pick up a second hand one if you can’t afford new. I got my first kettle second hand recently for $150 with a heap of accessories from fb marketplace. All it needed was a good clean and it came up looking brand new. The Weber customer service is second to none. They even sent me a brand new lid without having a receipt as I called them and mentioned some surface rust on it and how do I get rid of it. I’ve now upgraded a heap of the parts on mine for next to nothing by buying from Weber direct and it’s effectively a top of the range one for half the price. The enamel coating, heat retention are all so much better on a Weber.

Showing $99 for me. Also interested to know how this compares to a Weber kettle.

    • Please see my comment above. 100% go a Weber Kettle. And if you don’t want to outlay for new you can pick up a second hand one on marketplace for cheap as.

  • I have got an even cheaper Billabong Kettle BBQ(no thermometer, base looks a bit different than this one) that has been sitting in the sun and rain the last 5 years, and it’s still going strong

I bought a kettle BBQ from Bunnings for $45-50 at the beginning of the year, seemed like the normal price and I've had no problems with it so far.

no ash cup and no thermometer though

      Different shape also.

  • If my calculations are right, a Weber kettle uses 2.5x thicker steel for the hood/firepot.

  • Weber used be very good, but now are made in China and the quality is lower (aperently) . Aparently Costco sell (at least used) sell made in the US ones for about $200. I first bought a cheap Bunning kettle bbq and I burned through it in about 12-18 months. Then bought a Weber, which has lasted 8 years and is still going strong. I will need a new cooking grate at some point.

this one above is Vitreous enamelled which is good but the steel is much thinner than a Weber.

  • So went around and compare:
    1. this ($99)
    2. cheapie jumbuck ($68)
    3. Weber compact kettle ($219)
    4. Weber premium weber ($429)

    The comparison:
    1. This is decent for me. Sure, won't beat webers in terms of design and quality but I prefer this than a weber compact kettle in term of VFM and ease of use ($99 vs $219). Now, I forgot to check the bottom holes whether it can be easily clean like a Weber. If it doesn't, that's probably the only down point.
    2. Not for me. Probably does the job for a lot of people but doesn't the tick my boxes. For $31 more, the Billabong make it an affordable upgrade.
    3. Nice. Good quality built and design. Doesn't come with ash catcher and thermometer.
    4. Very nice. Tick all boxes. Looks real good. High quality built. I wish I have the money.

    My conclusion:
Agree with dwesh, if you can find a second handed weber for $150, go for it with no hesitation. In fact, there was one around me for $200 with about 40 mins drive. Happy to drive as well, but it was already pending pickup. Will keep an eye on one!

If nothing for another week, I will buy the Billabong kettle.

    • To add to your comparison list a standard Weber 57cm is only $305 delivered from appliances online. If you can’t find one second hand, I’d still spend the extra to go the Weber over this. You can upgrade yours to a premium later if you want. The main difference is the ash catcher and it’s only $60 including postage for the enclosed ash catcher from Weber. You can even turn it into a master touch by buying the gbs grill at a later date if you want. You can do everything on a standard kettle though that you can do on a master touch.
