Sofa Bed - Is There Such a Thing as a Comfy Bed?

I’m in the market for a sofa bed for my parents/in-laws when they come to stay (averaging about once a month for a night or two).
It’ll have to go in the sun room which isn’t a huge space.

Is there such a thing as a comfy sofa bed?

Dad has a bad back, so they are abit fussy what they sleep on. I currently have an old queen bed in the room, but I’m sick of looking at it in a common area given how infrequently it is used.

It doesn’t have to be the cheapest sofa bed in the market, am willing to pay for sleep comfort (if it exists!)

Thanks

I know people hate on the brand but legit the koala Sofa bed is the best we have found when we were searching

    • oops!
I ate the page you're looking for

        • Thanks Jimbo, I did see the Koala ones online and was thinking of visiting their showroom this week to see it in real life. It seems to have a lot of positive reviews, but it’s hard to judge if they were authentic ones!

How long have you had yours for?

@2190sarah: As someone with serious back issues, keep in mind that if your dad suffers from back pain, he might find this one too low. I know I'd struggle to get up out of that bed if it were me.

@2190sarah: We got ours at launch.
We had looked at others including Ikea and a few traditional ones.
The koala is not only a soft comfy couch but also a very squishy and soft bed. The lack of a frame makes a massive difference.

    I bought this from Ikea - https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/hemnes-day-bed-frame-with-3-dra…

Took about half a day to put it together slowly, I like it as it can be used as a single or expanded to take two single mattresses.

As a sofa it is fine too, the drawers are handy to store the pillows etc.

Don't know if other mattresses can be used but I bought the ikea ones, I like it but a little firm for some of my guests, a mattress topper solved all the issues.

    • I’ve thought about getting one of these, it’s a terrific idea, but I am not sure if my guests might be too heavy for the slats on the bed when extended? I think I read somewhere the weight limit for the extension is 90kg? Have you had any issues with weight restrictions?

I was also unsure if it’s difficult for the person within the lounge section to get in and out of the bed (noting the anticipated guests have bad backs etc). Have you found it tricky?

The obvious solution is that when my guests come I swap beds with them and sleep on the sofa and they have my proper bed… but I know my parents would feel uncomfortable accepting that.

      • Sorry, haven't had a couple stay yet so it's been used as a single. The person sleeping on it has a bad back though and is quite old, no issues getting in and out.

Perhaps they could both sleep head at the lounge section and feet at the extension?

Wasn't even aware there was a weight limit!was sturdy though so not that worried about it .

      • I offered some options below!

I have a King Furniture lounge and it adapts to be a bed (the back rests turn into pillows) and is fkn comfy but always looks like a lounge. Go for that if you can afford it.

We don’t have the sofa versions but guests, frequently, use our normal King couches for overnight sleeping.

    • Co-incidentally I also need a new lounge for the living room (my husband Is desperate for a couch with a recliner, and I want something that doesn’t look too much like a ‘lazy boy’) so king living was on my list! I should see if I can get something that ticks both boxes (although the problem with this plan is I was hoping to have the guests in the sun room to keep the lounge room free to hang out in).

I’ve got a lot of furniture on my ‘list’… at the moment my house is mostly furnished with stuff I’ve had since uni (inherited from family or scavenged from road side chuck outs 😳). I find interior design and shopping for furniture items intimidating so I am well over due for some grown up furniture…

Although not a cheap option there is something like this. It would free up the room, normally, and provide a real bed. I’ve not used them, personally, but might be worth a look.

  • Hi Sarah,

We offer a range of Sofa Beds with Memory Foam, these can be much comfier than standard innerspring.

  • What sofa bed did you end up getting? I’m in the market for one now, also wanting one for our study which doubles as the spare room so there isn’t a lot of room. And wanting to get a comfortable one for when our parents come and stay. Interested in what you settled on! Thanks.

    • I ended up getting the Koala one! It’s great, I was impressed with the build and the quality. I sleep on my stomach so I found it pretty firm, but way better than the old-school fold out beds.
I contacted Koala customer support about the firmness of the mattress as I heard somewhere you could get a mattress topper if needed, and they sent me out a memory foam mattress topper for free, which makes the bed super comfy (as comfy as my every day bed)!! Although… the mattress topper is extra bulk to store somewhere if space is an issue…
