Is it possible to run a "name your price" type deal on OzBargain?

Hey OzBargain community.

I look after an online bicycle shop, and we are thinking of running a type of "name your price" competition deal where people name a product and price, and if it is a plausible deal - we activate that product price for 15min.

We have done something similar in our other country stores with great success… a pretty cool way to offer deals on what people actually want.

My question is whether there would be a plausible way to post such a deal on OzBargain while following the deal guidelines?

Thanks for the input :)

Ha ha, I'm sure we'll get a few of those… we'll only do reasonable suggestions :')

  • It could work, depending on the price. You'd have to do it as a forum post though.

Another strategy is to work out your most common products sold and search other stores prices.

Then if cost price is less than competitors price then post a deal. (This is assuming you're not willing to sell at below cost)

Probably the wrong place or conditions to offer that kind of deal. I'm regularly checking the site maybe every hour or so, so a 15min window is way too small. As you've said, that kind of offer works well for in-person sales especially where you have realtime contact with customers like radio or face-to-face, who are able to respond.

Also, you're offering deals to the most scrupulous, deal-sniffing mob in Australia. You might as well offer your best price with an exclusive OzBargain voucher or something and add your deal as normal, otherwise you're wasting both your time and ours. We WILL research what you're offering, and start the bidding below that price, so you're not likely to either make any sales or make any money.

    • Yeah, you are right - an hour would probably work best. As for whether it would work on OzBargain it could work… we have run it on forums such as bikehub.co.za for our South African store and it's worked like a charm. Most people know the going market price for what they want, and if they can get a slightly better deal they are happy.

      • It may be different on OzBargain because it's a different audience as you mentioned, but worth a try if possible.

    • You're only checking Ozb every hour?

Run a weekend special, put the post up the day before or earlier that day to garner interest. Make sure there's enough stock on offer to warrant the effort, coz if it's gone within a minute you'll be negged to oblivion
