40oz Malt Liquor in Australia

Given the borders will likely shut for a prolonged period, I’m unable to enjoy one of my favourite guilty pleasures enjoyed in the LOTF&HOTB, an icy cold 40. Beer snobs may well scoff at my taste, but I am very partial to this particular style of beer!

Has anyone seen Mickeys, Old English, Colt 45, Miller Hi-Life etc in Australia, or buy them? I found a couple here but the prices are awful and some are plastic packaged (a big nope).

I’m in Brisbane and was hoping to get them in-store.

Cheers!

    What is "40oz"?

40oz Malt Liquor…this particular style of beer

??? I have always thought malt liquor was spirits.

      • Liquor is not a term I've heard here, when referring to beer. Hard liquor I've heard of, through film/TV series. I guess I can file this in TIL.

          Really?
There's even a major national retailer with the word in the name…

          Liquorland

          • @ESEMCE: So they only sell beer?

            • @brendanm: No, but I'm not sure what your point is…

They sell all forms of Liquor. Hence they are the Land of Liquor.

              • @ESEMCE: Rolts said "liquor is not a term I've heard before, when referring to beer".

                • @brendanm: Yeah and I expressed surprise that it had apparently never occurred to Rolts that the Liquor in LiquorLand refers to all of the stores wares (including the beer).

            @ESEMCE: Reason for my confusion:
            https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/liquor

            Definition of liquor
            a liquid substance: such as
a : a usually distilled rather than fermented alcoholic beverage

Do you sit under a rail bridge and drink it out of a brown paper bag?

    • No…..the bag could also be white plastic

      • What sort of self respecting bottle O would use plastic bags? All the other alcos would laugh at me.

  • Some of these larger/higher alcohol imports have disappeared due to the labelling change(and imported liquor in general). Every product coming into the country had to have the CDS labelling. Some are still coming in without, some are getting caught, some have stopped coming all together and some are heading to other countries first to be relabeled.

May/may not be part of the reason but the products you mentioned don't seem to be readily available from my wholesalers.

I’d be guessing, but I’d say as the tax is calculated on how many litres of pure alcohol is in the product and the fact the product is of fairly low quality, to import tax then sell the product would be a pretty hard sell.

  • No.

  • Not sure what LOTF&HOTB is…

Where do you normally get them? Do you bring them back from the US or is your usual importer not able to operate.

    • Land of the free…
