Phone Credit and Gift Cards from Major Supermarkets

I have a specific query but thought making it general would be more useful to the community.

I have a Coles e-gift card and Woolworths e-gift card and wish to buy Telstra credit.

Coles gift card support said I can't buy phone credit. Is that correct?

UPDATE: I'm not sure why the negativity from some members of the Ozbargain community.

What is said and what is actually possible often differs. It's where some of the great bargains of Ozbargain has originated from. Things like buying YouTube/Google Play Music from third world countries via VPN and having multiple accounts for cheaper introductory data from certain third party Telcos where it is stated you can only have one per person.

Coles gift card support said I can't buy phone credit.

      What about Woolworths?

And it's often the case that what support says and what is actual practice is different.

OP has been informed that gift cards may not be used for phone credit.

Proceeds to list what phone credit he can buy with gift cards.

  • +3

Yeah man, you can buy phone credit for sure. Take my word for it over the gift card support.

    • That's why I put a poll in. I wouldn't take your word for it but I would take many or the ozbargain community's word for it.

    Wish Gift Card - https://giftcards.woolworths.com.au/help?id=76
    Woolworths Gift Card - https://giftcards.woolworths.com.au/help?id=77

There are some limitations to the products you can buy with a WISH Gift Card:
    - Gift Cards and Vouchers
    - Lotto products
    - Donations or charity products

Phone Credit falls under the vouchers category.

Six months to a year ago I was able to purchase phone credit with e-gift card at Woolworths

      • -2

That was six months to a year ago. Things change … We weren't in a pandemic six months to a year ago where we had to social distance and queue to get into Coles and Woolies and there was a cap on how much toilet paper you can buy in one transaction …

Also, your poll needs a none of the above option/unable to buy phone credit with gift card option

I was able to buy $30 Telstra credit with Woolworths WISH e-gift card a few minutes ago.

What is stated is different to what is actual practice.

    • for anyone searching on google: this isn't correct, vouchers is relating to 'gift cards' not relating to 'mobile recharge'. you can use WISH gift cards to pay for recharge vouchers

  • If you’re really convinced it should or would work, why don’t you go into a store and try it then report back to us.

You can buy Telstra vouchers using the self checkout machines at both coles and woolworths, and use wish/coles gift cards to pay for them. I do it every few weeks.

Uber/Netflix/Skype etc physical gift cards can't be purchased using wish/coles gift cards

    • Thanks for the constructive reply bdl.

If you can buy (it's your or someone you trust recent direct buying experience) Telstra credit at both Woolworths and Coles then please vote for those two options.

    • When's the last time you tried at Coles?

Buying Telstra credit at Coles self-service checkout is technically blocked.

      I just tried.

      • It's been a white, to be honest. Reason being, they stopped giving flybuys for recharge vouchers whilst woolw was still giving rewards points.. :)

Normally I’d say why don’t you call both and ask but clearly OP has no credit :)

The poll doesn't work because you can buy any phone credit with gift cards at both Coles and Woolworths.

    • Thanks for the constructive reply capslock.

If you can buy (it's your or someone you trust recent direct buying experience) any credit then please vote for all six options.

  • Why? Kogan and Catch have better deals. Hence, no need to buy these credits, no need to know about it.

    • Not if you want to keep your OneDrive GB of cloud storage and/or the better network if going bush.
