[Melbourne] Where to Exchange Kenyan Shillings to AUD?

I've had to return from travels in Africa due to COVID and been left holding a reasonable sum of Kenyan Shillings(withdrawn from a local ATM)-in hindsight, I regret not exchanging whilst still there but got bad vibes from a place I had visited to check their rates.

I've been on the hunt for a place that trades in KSH(ideally in Melbourne) so I can convert back into AUD.

I've tried various local FX stores in the CBD, checked the websites of many others and called up NAB who have said they just exchange via Travellex, none of which deal in it or have reopened yet to confirm.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places that deal with seemingly bespoke currencies?

Your best bet is to go to an area populated by Kenyans in Melbourne.
See a travel agent there / currency exchage.

    • Where would that be?

I only know 2 Kenyans and they live close to Fountain Gate. I believe there's a travelex there. If you're in the area…

      • Good question.
I would take a chance in Footscray (pun intended).
I know a lot of Ethiopians restaurants are there, not Kenyans, but they're neighbouring countries so I would expect there will be a market for Kenyan Shillings.

  • https://crowncurrency.com.au/buy-and-sell/ say they do but are closed due to Covid-19

    Maybe try when they re-open.

    Sprung :p

"Almost one billion dollars of public money has allegedly disappeared in a Kenyan corruption scandal. So why are thousands of Kenyans using social media to ask the US government's most senior lawyer to locate the supposedly missing money?"

  • ANZ Collins Place (55 Collins) may be able to advise - that's their forex HQ

    • CHeers, will check them out

  • If I'm not wrong I think it's actually not permitted to export Tanzanian shillings out of the country, upon exit you need to have them converted into another currency

From memory it was the same with Kenyan shillings as well?

I don't believe that this is the case for Kenyan shillings

There is currently no limit on the amount of local and foreign currency that travellers can import into the country. Residents of Kenya are free to import up to 500,000 Kenyan Shillings and an unlimited amount of foreign currency.
The same rules apply for both locals and visitors if exporting currency out of the country although sums equal to USD 500 will need to be declared at the customs department.
