Help me buy a lawn mower!

I have a 1200 sqm block. About 400sqm of flat, thick grass out the back and probably 200sqm of flat, thinner grass out the front. We live in Queensland, so mow weekly in summer.

I don’t think electric will work because of the amount of lawn and the thickness.

My hubby recently injured both shoulders and while I manage with the ordinary Honda I wonder whether I should get a key start and self propelled.

I just want good quality - I’m not looking for the cheapest.

Any lawn mowing repair people out there that can make a recommendation?

  • We have a Ryobi 36+, and the lawn would be @ 100sq m. It uses about 50% of the battery, however the batteries are about 7 years old.
Easy to maintain, if the ground is reasonably flat. as you said, Electric may not be for you.

I have to ryobi 36v too. It’s great because it’s light, but I wouldn’t recommend for 600sqm. Especially if you use the same battery for edging.

Also used my parent's lawn mower which is self propelled. Good for long straight lines and uphill, but terrible in tight spaces (e.g. around and under trees) - they have a lot of trees in the middle of the lawn.

  • AEG electric lawn mower and AEG electric line trimmer + blower with same battery.

    • Looks amazing but I hated the robotic vacuum cleaner - didn’t cope with LEGO or any of the other thousands of toys the kids leave around!

      • which one did you get? we've just had hard floors done and the Mrs wants one, what's the best one out there as in bang for buck? (needs to be smart!)

        • It was a Neeto. It’s going back a while but I thought it was useless. If your house is like a show home it might be ok. I use a Dyson stick. I’ve mostly got hard floors and I use it constantly instead of a broom. I’ve had three of them and couldn’t live without it. It rate it as one of my best every purchases. Goes straight over the LEGO!!

Just get a self propelled Honda if you want good and reliable.

Agree that Honda is a reliable unit - just purchased a 21 inch cut self propelled. My only issue is that it weights just under 40kg, and in tight places, the length of the machine makes it difficult to manoeuver. It copes well with my acre. And just a thought, there are Honda's being sold in Australia which do not come with a warranty because they are manufactured for the Chinese market, so buy from an authorised dealer. Good luck with whatever you choose.

    • Yes, we will probably get the Honda again. We’ve had ours for about 11 or 12 years and it’s been good. I just wanted to check if anything new had come out since then. There is a lot of talk about the electric ones but even the best ones don’t sound like they’d be able to cover our lawn.

  • My 25 year old Honda self propelled was brilliant, so it was easy to make the choice.

I have a 1029sq block, similar amount of grass - maybe a little less.

I've had an Ego 52cm self propelled for a few years and would totally recommend it. —> https://egopowerplus.com.au/power-52cm-self-propelled-lawn-m…

If the grass gets too long or is wet, I struggle to get through the entire lawn on one charge but if done on a reasonable basis I can do the lawn + whipper snipping with time to spare no dramas. I don't use the self propelled function much, so if you did that would probably reduce the run time. I would never go back to a petrol mower, even if I did have to recharge or buy a second battery.

It is a bit of an investment, but is very low maintenance - blades only. No oil/fuel/spark plug/filter to deal with. I paid 1k back then with a free entry level line trimmer skin. Have had no issues with the mower but the line trimmer failed and the motor, I believe, was replaced under warranty.

Have you considered a ride on?

If its 400sqm of mostly flat thick grass out back that's what I would be looking towards.
