Statutory Warranty & Interstate Car Purchase

To anybody who has bought an interstate car that came with a statutory warranty (3 months or 5000 Km) could you help with a few questions

A) Can it still be enforced (without returning car to point of purchase for repair)

B) Vendor want's to sell me a 3 year mechanical warranty instead, are these a good idea?

Its a 2016 vehicle so I'd hope for no major warrantable failures but if they happen they would probably be pricey

TIA

    A) Ask the dealer if they have a local mechanic in your area that they can use just in case the car has issues before the warranty

    • Also before the warranty expires, get the car checked for warranty inspection

    B) Extended warranty is from an external insurance company that has so many conditions and clauses that IMO it is not worth it

The car purchased has to be less than 10 years old and under 160K Kms to have the stat warranty.

I would also organise a pre-mechanical inspection before purchase

There is also one day cooling off period (used cars) however with conditions

    Cheers

State specific (WA doesn't have cooling off periods, for example)

      • Thanks for the heads up for WA

Yes, its true that WA doesn't have a cooling off period. VIC has 3 business days.

Edit: You should also be aware that the cooling off period is not a free ride, in VIC change of mind cost you the greater off 10% or $100 of your deposit, so, I've tagged a satisfactory inspection clause onto my offer (obviously I'm the one who gets to decide whats satisfactory) which should allow me to walk away with entire deposit as its not change of mind its a contract clause that was not met.

    a) No, not without going to the selling dealer for the right to repair
    b) Nope, you'd have to service through that dealer, or an affiliate dealer (ie AHG, DVG etc).

    What sort of car?

Buying interstate has to be pretty cheap to justify it.

    • Buying interstate has to be pretty cheap to justify it.

Pretty cheap or its an uncommon car, in this case both.

      • Do you mind me asking you, what type of car you're seeking?

        • Lets not jinx the purchase :)

      • I'm assuming you've done a PPSR?

        • Its a dealer sale so in theory they are responsible for ensuring that the car has clear title before they buy and resell it.. But yes, I'll spend the 2 bucks on a PPSR.

No worth's it. make sure you read the term and condition before your decide. Usually you need to service your car every 3 months and need to change everything that your log box specified.

    • I can't see how it makes sense for me, there is bound to be small print and wiggle room in it for the insurer, I think its more a CYA from the dealers end plus undoubtedly they will get a cut.

My concern really is the first 3 months if there is anything fundamental it should show itself in that time period after that random breakages are just part of owning a car…

  • This is state legislation so I imagine it only relates to that state's citizens.
The dealer has a right to repair so you must take it back.
    Good luck on that one

    • Its not just related to state citizens but yes, dealer most likely has right to repair.

I have had discussions with them and they say as they have branches in other states and they have in the past done repairs at interstate sites when necessary, only problem is they don't have a site in my state.

      • So what would you like to happen if you need repairs under warranty?

  • Is this an online transaction?

  • Lol, yes ALWAYS get an inspection before you buy a car and then go through the paperwork with a fine tooth comb!.. More follows when I get to the bottom of this shit storm.

    • PM me with more info? I'm curious now!

    • How can there be a shit storm if you haven't even bought the car yet? If you haven't bought the car and you foresee a shit storm , just walk away.
