It's a phone holder with basic lenses.
You need the best phone to be bearable, and then it overheats the phone quickly.
It's probably the content playing on the phone that makes it heat up.

These devices are pretty much redundant and useless now.. Cardboard and most other VR apps have been stripped of all useful functionality, they're still in the play store but there's basically nothing you can do with them.. The Samsung gear VR headsets have gone the same way I believe…

More or less yes - certainly the best bang for buck is Oculus.
But you can't really do cheap VR.
I've never followed VR but what happened to mobile VR?
Google seemed to drop it all, I don't know if they sold out to Oculus, or if they just stepped aside because they didn't want to compete in that market..
Probably just wasn't worth the resources tbh, small target audience I assume alongside limited hardware for a niche activity

Yes you can, I bought one of these this past weekend and have been playing Half Life Alyx :) It's a lot of tweaking depending on your PC specs though.
