Chasing a Tablet 8" or 10" $100-$200

Hi guys,

in the game for an Android or Android-Windows Tablet, no apple. Size something between 8" and 10".

Budget 100-200 bucks, Ozbargain prices. Would consider 2nd hand if something sticks out of good value.

What I'd Like to see:

  • Wifi (yes there are tablets without / or really slow)
  • Bluetooth
  • Video playback without stutter (I listen to music via Youtube, video playback most of the time)
  • Prefer IPS Display (not necessary), 720p+ (1280x720 or above)

Just wondering what's out there, Chinese Tablets any good? Please recommend what you're using or eyeing yourself.

TIA

  • To piggy back on OPs post -

Looking to spend $200-$300 on an android tablet for my daughter to watch youtube and play a few peppa pig games.

    • battery size not important, as it'll only be used in small bursts.
    • storage is not that important either as it's mostly just youtube and a few low storage games
    • would prefer a decent amount of RAM so that it doesn't stutter.
    • camera not required (but don't care if it comes with one).

    TIA :D

Per other threads where this question has been asked, get an iPad or a Samsung.
The most important part of buying a kids tablet is getting an EVA Foam case that fits the tablet and that requirement pretty much excludes all other brands.
The tablet WILL get stood on, thrown across the room, have food and drink spilled on it and in my personal experience, dropped into the bath!
In all cases our tablets have survived thanks to their EVA foam cases and monitoring closely enough to rescue the tablet from further abuse and rectify the immediate issue (ie drying off the bathwater).

FYI RAM plays no role in "reducing stuttering", it'll allow you to multi-task (ie flip between multiple apps without them re-loading)

Thanks a lot for the input and extra information on RAM.

OP - Avoid the Chinese Tablets and just get a low end Lenovo or Samsung.

    • low end Lenovos work fine and are easy to get - available at Officeworks.

  • find an old manufacturer refurbished samsung

  • Get a chinese tablet if you want a battery that lasts 8 months. You get what you paid for with them. They are highly disposable and you can easily get something off aliexpress or geekbuy for under $100 that are suitable for youtube/browsing machines.

Lenovo or samsung tablets will last you 3 years and have much, much better build quality.

heh maybe 5 years ago, these days the batteries are quite decent, got one last year and it hasn't missed a beat, battery life is excellent ~8hrs

      • That's awesome to hear. I bought one for an in-law 2 years ago (chuwi), sub $100 and she said after 8 months it was not so good.

        What did you get?

        • i got these for around $160 with the 20% cashback https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32979365985.html

it's got some minor touch screen issues and the software doesn't utilise the full power of the soc(its a72, but performs close to cheaper a53), for basic tasks/videos it handles with no problems and parents have been using it daily

i haven't been following but the budget chinese tablet space seems kinda dead… the last good tablet seems to be this one: https://techtablets.com/teclast-t30/ which uses the same a73 soc as the budget samsung tab 2019 version

so at $100-200 currently its still the a53 soc's that are the only option, they're good for basic tasks but have been around forever it seems…

            @abctoz: Great recommendation.

I agree the tablet space is kinda dead. I think a lot of people are waiting for the bezel-less tablets. Often they photoshop the bezels much smaller in the promotions, so I'll always look up the reviews on youtube.
Im still using a nvidia shield from 2016. Battery is on its last leg, and I'll look at replacing it in the next 6 months. I use it mostly for reading books and hdmi-out while teaching.

            • @DarthAntz: not sure if possible but you can think about just replacing the battery, they're quite cheap on aliexpress <$30 for a decent size one, some really big capacity too 10000mah, i read some russians were able to do it with the chinese tablets on the 4pda forums, you'll have to find one that fits and might have to do some basic soldering

              • @abctoz: Yes i work in a technical school, so the soldering and tool work is fine. But i need to do my research and see if a different size battery would be suitable, and have the same connectors. That would be awesome. Actually I'll do that now. Thanks for these posts!

  • We had some older Samsung tablets given to us which we used for our girls, they are fine mostly for basic things with only 1gb of RAM the kids have learned to close apps if things are running slowly.

My biggest problem is actually that they cannot be upgraded past android 5.0 and there is very limited ROM support for my specific model. Normally wouldn't present an issue but they only have 16Gb of onboard memory, I have some old micro SD cards in them so I can move some app data there but it still keeps some space on the onboard storage.

Essentially if I want to install an app the kids need to choose what they want to lose.

Android 6.0 and above you can pool your onboard and microSD data making this not an issue.

    • Thanks all for reply, guess I have to look out for a Samsung, new or second hand. Any specific model's you guys recommend?

    • Definitely worth looking up how to flash a custom ROM to those tablets.

Flashing a Cutom ROM to my daughter's Lenovo P8 has improved it out of sight.

      • Probably more so making sure they have some support for custom ROM's, they are cheapies but would hate to brick one and then actually have to pay for a tablet!

  • Plenty of used 8" and 10" Samsung Tab A tablets selling for $80 to $100 in good condition.
They are around 2016 models usually with 2GB RAM and 16GB memory plus wifi and 4G mobile SIM card slot running Android 7 or 8.
They also have expansion memory slot.
    These run very well indeed.
You dont need anything better really.
    Check Gumtree or facebook

    • cheers was looking at those, pretty sure once one pops up I pull the trigger. Thanks all for helping.

  • Don't be afraid to seek ex display models.

  • Any updates OP as I am interested in using one as an eReader and more portable unit for around the house.

  • Hey mate, still looking for a deal with the EOFY. Narrowed it down to a Second hand Samsung Tab S2 8" or a New Samsung Tab A 8". If anyone see's a deal, don't hesitate to post here :)
    Cheers.

  • How's this search going?
My tablet requirement is to read downloaded magazines and books, watch downloaded movies or Youtube, email etc.
Storage not crucial - I delete after watching.
But for these uses, resolution is important.

hey mate, have not seen a single EOFY sale on Samsung tablets. Cheapest Tab A 8.0 was $250 with Kogan, which is normal price, no deal. There's a few Tab S2 8.0 (has superior Display) on Ebay I'm eyeing but they go for over 200 after auction, 2nd hand too much coin.
