4 Days to Port between Optus MVNOs and Only 10mins between Telstra MVNOs

I have found in the last few months when porting between Optus Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) such as Catch, Amaysim, E.tel etc its taking a very long time.

Obviously you dont port till your credit period has expired or on the last day. But then find its taking forever for your port request to happen.

I put in my port request very early Monday morning and 4 days later I get an SMS from Optus that its happening today after 11am.
Its now 12 noon and Im still left high and dry with no phone service.
Same happened to a friend last year when porting from Optus to amaysim. So its not COVID19 delays as they claim.

Whereas only a couple of weeks ago I helped a friend port from Telstra to Belong which is an MVNO run by Telstra and the porting only took 10mins.

Anyone else experiencing huge delays porting between Optus MVNOs?

Anyone else experiencing huge delays porting between Optus MVNOs?

Was a few years back but porting from Virgin Mobile to Optus took a week

Its now 12 noon and Im still left high and dry with no phone service.

Have you put your new sim in? Generally if your old sim loses service when porting it means your new service on the new provider is active

  • Within 4 business hours for me.

    • Mine has always been instant ever since I got a new number last year.

      • I doubt it is instant for porting within Optus network.

        • Longest I’ve had to wait is an hour on the weekend.

Porting from one Optus MVNO to another (including Optus, itself) is a manual process performed by a human at a computer. This can take an indeterminate amount of time, depending on staffing and demand.

Porting from one network to another is automated and almost instant.

Technically, the quickest way to port from one Optus MVNO to another would be to obtain a Telstra or Vodafone SIM, port to that, and then port to the desired company once the initial port is complete. I should note, however, that the extra step in the process is another avenue by which an error could arise.

    • is a manual process performed by a human at a computer

      LMAO.

And proponents of privatisation actually make the ludicrous claim that the private sector is more efficient than a Government monopoly. None of this exists with one provider.

    • Ported Optus to Optus a couple months back, which took multiple complaints after a fortnight of waiting. It eventually ported. Decided to port to Telstra first this time and then port back to Optus with another family member. Porting Optus to Telstra took half an hour, but porting back to Optus has now taken over 4 business day and waiting. Can't win either way.

      • By porting to Optus to another family member, do you mean you’re porting to their account?

Porting a prepaid service must go to the same name as it uses a Date of Birth match. The only way you can port from name A at telco 1 to name B at telco 2 is if it’s a post-paid service, as it technically only requires the account number (although they are meant to ensure the account are under the same name and DOB; telcos ignore this).

The only exception to the name change rule is if it’s within Optus, though, as the manual process means they’ll be checking the name and DOB matches fully, and will block the port even if it’s the correct account number.

  • Porting from MVNOs on the same network is more complicated than just porting between networks as it's a manual process so it can take anything from 1 hour to a week depending on how busy the workers are in each different company.

I think the Telstra/Belong is an exception because Belong IS Telstra just re-branded.

    • it's a manual process so it can take anything from 1 hour to a week

Wow, mindblowingly efficient compared to none of that having to happen.

      /s

  • Yeah mine took 4 days from Optus MVNO to Optus MVNO. Should be illegal, as in, handing over the process to competent people.

  • OK So this 4 day delay sounds like the norm for Optus MVNOs

Interesting suggestion about porting out of the Optus network first then porting back in. More dramas though.

The lesson learnt here is to port out 4 days before your credit period expires when porting between Optus MVNOs

I should add that the Optus MVNO in this case (E.tel) did quote between 3 and 7 days for porting.(From Catch Connect)

  • I’ve applied to port out my number from Optus to Telstra about last week Monday. I still don’t have any coverage as Optus reject my request as they have $8 porting out fee and you have to confirm that you are going to pay. I talk to them and agreed to pay that also from other hand there is no customer care in Telstra to talk to and asked them to applied again.
So now I have to talk to some machine which has very limited answers to my request. Very bad experience with Telstra

  • Hello hello hello.
