It's only an estimate. The 2 times I've bought something from Amazon US during COVID19 has arrived 1-2 weeks early.

  • Tempted but might hold out till its $260 again!

    • +1

Maybe $280. $260 would be a long wait.
$300 is alright if you need one now.

      • Was $265 in Feb, so maybe not that long?

        • +1

Paid with 28 Degrees. If it drops will claim price protection.

        • Tend to agree …. not that camelcamelcamel pricing history graph ever makes sense but in this instance history does shows an overall & ongoing price decrease shape, so that plus oz dollar is firming atm, and lastly the end of the financial year approacheth.

      • And $295 is under the 'claim depreciation in a single year' threshold for tax

Thanks OP, grabbed one to shuck so I can finally upgrade from my over decade old 500GB HDD that is somehow still living

How to utilize a HDD with ssd dual link.

The inside of a expansion drive:
    https://youtu.be/1RQv9raiPQg
    Looks very cheap

(Imagine if that was enough to fit 30 ssd's, you could fit 1tb for every 1 2inches, and have roughly 30 maybe, in that boxes form factor, But would need some internal cooling.

30tb ssd inside a expansion desktop, would be much cheaper maybe in 2030, the cost tho would be $6000 based on the average price of $200-1tb.)
    .

    • That's quite an effort to get the drive shucked…..when compared to WD! Imagine putting it back together in case you wanted to claim the warranty!

    • That youtube video shows the 3tb drive you get in these, the 10tb comes with a barracuda pro, a totally different disk.

  • +1

Why are these external drives so much cheaper than their bare counter parts?
Is it really the barracuda pro inside

  • I don't usually jump on these deals but I haven't downloaded anything in a long time due to lack of free space and I wouldn't mind jumping on the Launtel 1Gpbs trial soon and taking advantage of it lol

What do you guys recommend to do to test it thoroughly for any errors before writing anything to it? Is there any free software that does it without too much fiddling around? (I saw someone here link a reddit post but that had instructions on using 3-4 different tools through CLI or linux, I'm looking for something simpler?)

  • Currently have a HP N54L with 4x2TB HDD (can't remember what drives) running Synology OS, if i were to get this, get the HDD and replace it with one of the drive in my NAS, will Synology be smart enough to extend the storage?

I'm thinking of getting one of this to replace on of my NAS drive, cause I'm running out of space.

  • Thanks, bought 2, huge upgrade over my old 2tb drives :)

  • Price dropped again :-)

  • Mine finally shipped this morning. Coming via Fastway though which is terrible round here :(

    • +2

      Fastway is terrible everywhere.

Last time I checked my parcel online got pick up ready for deliver several times in three days but still nobody show up until I emailed them and got delivered at 8pm.

  • Price back up to $300

  • +1

You can get this pricebeat at officeworks for a cheaper price.

    • Can you?

They are $498 at officeworks and $298 on amazon, wish i had of known this i would've tried.

      • Can confirm. I was able to pick this up from Officeworks for $303 after price beat as they included shipping in total price despite prime.
        Drive was barracuda pro

        • which OW did you try?

      • I tried today at OfficeWorks in Alexandria and the sales assistant denied the price beat when she saw the US plug on the Amazon-AU page. She asked the tech associate to examine the price beat and he also denied it so I think they are aware of this grey importing and are now denying price beat requests on them. YMMV.

  • Got mine yesterday, Fedex from US. What’s the best way to test these before shucking ??

    • following!

Would be interested to hear how you go!

    • I usually run HD sentinel surface test, write + read test. You can just do wd lifeguard extended smart test if you don’t have HD sentinel.

  • I expect mine to arrive DOA. Shipping was delayed, checked tracking and it departed & arrived at the amazon facility a few times. Then it got sent to the wrong carrier facility in a different state and sat there for 4-5 days before being transferred to the correct facility. Now it's finally on it's way. Sucks that they're using fastway, I kinda don't expect to arrive it at all. At least if the courier decides to steal it, it won't work for him.

  • What's the warranty?

  • Hey guys, how do we know for sure the drive inside of this is actually the Seagate Barracuda Pro (ST10000DM0004)? The drive retails for twice the price of these things so it doesn't make much business sense for Seagate to use that model drive. It received some excellent numbers from AnandTech's benchmarks (https://www.anandtech.com/show/10497/seagate-barracuda-pro-1…). Makes sense to shuck these since they are rated for 24x7 operation and workload ratings of 300TB/year plus a five year warranty. Excellent speeds to.

I'm interested in buying three of these to replace all of my WD Red drives in my Synology NAS but concerned that I might end up getting a different model drive inside when I go to shuck.

    • +1

My drive shows as ST10000DM0004 from crystal disk info. So yes, a barracuda pro.

    • +2

Dw I shucked mine yesterday, it literally says BarraCuda Pro with that model number.

      • Thanks mate, just ordered a few.

    • In my experience you're unlikely to get the 5 year warranty on the bare drive once shucked. They run different serial numbers and can only be returned for replacement as an unopened external drive (although if you were careful when shucking it you could probably jam it all back together and nobody would be any the wiser).

  • Does anyone know why the 10TB Barracuda Pro is listed as compatible with a bunch of Synology's more expensive NAS boxes but not my humble DS215j?

  • Just received mine. Delivered by a UPS driver.
Small dent on the Seagate box but it's actually nicely protected with cardboard inserts.
I have an original ThunderBay IV and I think the highest capacity drives is 4TB, so will keep it external for now.

  • Price dropped to $298.53 on 24/6/20. So close to buying but I ended up going for the WD 12TB instead for $355.02 since I plan to shuck in a NAS…

… although a Barracuda Pro seems very highly regarded! Pity my desktop PC only has space for two 3.5" drives and I've already shucked an 8TB and an old 2TB drive!

  • +3

    Mine is arriving today

    So ordered on 8/6 - delivered on 24/6 - 16 days

    Came via Fastway.

Edit: Yep it's been delivered :D

    Total of 26TB + 500g SSD + 1TB NVME - should see me right for a while.

  • I ordered three of these when they were $300.97 each. I hit up Amazon and got a $20 credit applied to my account for the price dropping after I ordered :)

    • Out of interest did you get that from the first person you spoke to or did you need to escalate? I've had mixed success in the past.

  • Now $299.40

  • Currently $297, plus 5% cashback from Cashrewards or Shopback: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548863

    • Still so tempted… bought a 5 bay NAS, do I rush to fill it up?

  • Was $301 earlier today and now $308. I think this bargain is over unfortunately.

    Damn my indecisiveness!
