Oculus Rift S Virtual Reality Headset AU $649 Shipped @ Oculus.com

230

On a similar theme to a few other deals of late, this is not a historically low price but rather something that has been out of stock for a long time. Free delivery it seems (as you'd hope).

Cheaper than on Amazon AU where 3rd party sellers are asking a stupid price.

I wanted Quest 128GB, but the prices have shot up like Bitcoin :-(.

I heard that the Rift S still look better than Quest if you plan to cable up to your PC to play. But of course the portability of Quest is a big selling point.

      • +2

I prefer the look of the Quest more imo. Quest is a better buy imo, can do everything the Rift S can plus the portability. Also not much updates are getting pushed to the Rift S compared to Quest from what i heard (hand tracking etc). Reckon get Rift S if your after best performance as it has a higher refresh rate.

        • Pity the Quest is lower refresh rate though, and probably heavier.
I find myself wanting more than my Rift S's 80hz but still manage 4 hour sessions.

It'd be nice if I got to compare a quest and an Index, I've only ever user Rift S and samsung vr (which was severely underwhelming)

        • Rift S definitely looks better. Practically all reports indicate this.

The refresh rate is not noticeable going from the 90hz cv1 to the Quest.

Finally back in stock, seeing all these people selling new and used on ebay/facebook for 1k

Just FYI not that it really affects the nature of the deal at all, but have fun dealing with Fedex for the delivery experience. Absolute nightmare (purchased on of these quite recently).

    • How bad is it? I just ordered mine.

Also how long did it take? Pre Covid?

      • Ordered mine two weeks ago.

Travelled from Hong Kong to Shanghai to Matraville (NSW) in 3 days.

Then sat in NSW for 5 days. Then another 2-3 days to get to Perth.

Also I had it shipped to my work (A BP. So a site that is open 24/7 and a staff member on the counter 24/7) and they still claimed they were unable to make the delivery. I then had to go out to the depot at the airport so that it wouldn't sit there all weekend.

        • My recent AustPost exp.
18 days Express Post Sydney CBD > Perth CBD. Tracking had "Delayed" for 1 week.
9 days Express Post Brisbane > Perth CBD. Tracking didn't update after processing in Bris until it arrived.

          • @raybies: Also experienced horrible service with Toll today. Package been "out for delivery" since yesterday morning. No delivery. No collection slip. No update to tracking.
Honestly seems like most couriers are just a joke at this stage.

    • I agree, I’m still waiting for mine which is still sitting in Matraville NSW for days after it had been sitting in Singapore for days. For a delivery that’s meant to be “priority” Fedex are complete trash.

  • About time it's back in stock. Some of the prices people were asking for this were just ridiculous on used marketplaces. Estimated delivery is going to take 20 days though but probably worth it. Thanks OP.

For those interested the Quest is widely regarded as the better buy currently, as much as the Rift S does technically fair better visuals wise on PC it's not a big enough margin to recommend it over the Quest. Mainly because of the options the Quest gives you in regards to both PCVR and stand alone experiences and the attention it receives from Oculus as it's main project. Whereas the Rift S is more so a WMR rebrand then it is a true successor to the Rift, due to this Oculus neglect the Rift S quite a bit in all aspects. The 80Hz vs 72Hz is imperceptible, and if you use an Index or a Pimax at 120-144Hz and switch you will notice but odds are you have not due to the limited options in the Australian market, so don't worry about it too much, it's not a deal breaker.

So generally just buy the Quest if you can, the freedom of standalone and the capability of running PCVR to a comparable standard to other headsets is huge, further the included charging cable now works as an Oculus Link cable. (And if you get Virtual Desktop setup correctly you can play PCVR wirelessly, and well!)

Thank you for your informative post

What the usual RRP of the quest? Compared to the rift s ATM

As someone who needs glasses I know I can wear glasses under the rift s, any idea if this is the same with the quest?

Edit: 649 for 64gb.. out of stock

I did hear that the weight of the quest compared to the vr is another point

Quest Comfort is a mixed bag, while the weight itself isn't shocking it's the fact that it's all in the front, so you get a lot more pressure on the face, this is compounded by the flexible strap rather than a more conventional solution such as a Halo. I've found that as long as I position it correctly with the strap cupping the lower part of my skull I have no issues at all but it really depends on your personal tolerance. That being said comfort can be improved vastly with a counter weight such as a battery pack using a 3d printer part found on eBay etc. or just putting something together yourself. I've tried both battery pack, DAS and a combination of the two and I'll say the stock strap with a battery pack is good enough and the DAS is better but not enough so that I'd say you need it.

To the glasses point it includes a glasses spacer in the box so you should be fine on that front, I've never needed to use it but I also haven't heard any complaints, on the same topic Quest has a physical IPD adjustment (58–72mm) whereas the Rift S does not (fixed 63.55mm), which helps people who aren't in the Rift S range.

If you do get any Quest mods I recommend highly a facial interface replacement or cover, battery pack counter weight for comfort and play time and a knuckles strap for the controller. In terms of facial interface a silicone cover works great, it's what I use as it's easy to clean for sharing, blocks sweat and is affordable (<$15). Lastly I'd say the knuckles straps improve the game play experience significantly and I wouldn't go without them.

        TL:DR

Comfort is not superb but fine and can be made much better on the cheap or close to perfect with more expensive mods. Glasses are fine + added benefit on Quest of a wider IPD range. Lastly get a facial interface cover or full replacement if you feel inclined, some sort of counter weight solution such as battery pack holder and a knuckles strap mod, really elevates gameplay in games such as Alyx.

        • Thanks again!

Alyx, superhot and a couple of other games would be what I have in mind to play

@vanyellow: All good, great to hear, hope you enjoy whatever VR headset you decide to get :)

      • I found the quest a bit uncomfy at first, but after 5-6 hours use it doesnt really bother me anymore. I actually use it to watch YouTube most nights too, the wireless nature of it makes that convenient. I've fallen asleep with it on a number of times lol though tend to wake up shortly afterwards.

I remember after I first played Superhot the whole thing messed with my brain, kind of expected time to stand still in real life if I wasnt moving. Don't get that anymore, but its surprising how these things can impact you at first.
