Do Credit Cards Charge a Conversion Fee When Buying from BuyBuyBox?

When you pay for an item at BuyBuyBox, will credit cards charge a foreign conversion fee?

I've got a 28 Degrees card I can use if so otherwise I'll use my other card to get points. I've had a couple of times when a site charged me in AUD but it somehow still picked up as a foreign currency and slugged me a conversion fee.

Why your buying from a website that’s not secure?

A few years ago banks started charging "foreign transaction fees", so even if the currency was AUD you would be charged extra if the vendor had an overseas account.

    • Hi Westpac!

      • Yeah. "Oh we messed up with these charges so have a refund, we're still going to keep charging them though."

  • Doesn't matter if it is AUD or not, matters where the payment processor is.

There is a list here of some sites that use an overseas one, but it is not exhaustive

  • Ah thanks that makes sense. So does anyone know if BuyBuyBox processes their payments with a foreign processor? If you pay via PayPal and it's .au domain, it should be fine?

Looks like it's pot luck and only way to know is past experience or ask the merchant…
