Vive Index in Australia, Is There a Good Way to Import It to Australia or Are There Any Good Alternatives Currently Available

I’m currently using a Lenovo WMR and have been considering a new VR headset and have mostly decided I want to get a Valve Index, the issue is Valve is not currently selling them in Australia and they haven’t said anything about doing it in the future. I’ve looked at both the Vive Pro and the Vive Cosmos Elite but both seem to be significant worse than the valve index for about the same price.

I calculated it would cost

$1440 ($1000USD) + 10% import tax + aprox $110 to ship it using ShopMate = $1697

I have no issue paying that much but I don’t like spending that much on something if I don’t get warranty.

I’ve also considered getting a Vive Cosmos elite with valve knuckles controllers but at that point I’d be spending about $2000 for a downgrade compared to the Index

I want to know if anyone else has done this and if they did how they did it, how much it cost and if they have had to deal with the warranty at all.

  • One thing worth noting is the Vive HMDs are able to use the wireless adapter, while the Index does not.

Is it a total ripoff? Yes. But wireless is a game changer, once you've used it you can't go back.

I'd try and import the Index controllers and use them with one of the Vive models with wireless. The Index controllers seem to have many fewer issues than the Index itself.

    • That’s most likely what I’m going to do, I considered the wireless but if you add on the extra cost of getting the headset if I want the index controllers it’s about $1000 for wireless and I get a worse headset. I’m going to be waiting for a deal on the Cosmos if I end up getting that so hopefully there is some news on index coming to Australia while I wait

      • Sensible decision I think. It's debateable if they are inherently "worse" than the Index, though. They all have strengths and weaknesses. The Index controllers are the really revolutionary part.

  • Check out the new HP Reverb 2: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/vr/reverb-g2-vr-headset.html

The screen is actually higher resolution than the Index, and doesn't require base stations either. The one main downside I can think of is that you can't use Index controllers with it, but look into it, it's the closest thing we'll be getting to an Index for a while, and it's even cheaper.

    • I currently have an inside out tracking windows mixed reality and have alot of issues with tracking. I'm sure the new ones are better but I'm looking to go for somthing that uses base stations.
