Recommend: Car & Motorcycle Battery Charger

Please advise per your experience the battery charger for the car and motorcycle.

Car is sedan and a motorcycle 800cc.

Reason I started looking for above as one year old (newly replaced) battery didn't deliver. Failed to start the car and ended up jump start help.

Battery bought from SCA (century model) last year, only thing I can think of is water level or some other reason which drained the battery (investigate tonight - update: interior light left on for 4+ hr)).

Car get driven on reasonable level, short and long distance. Short being 20km or long 70km in a day (3-4 days in a week).

Also being 6+ months since car is serviced which will be done this month.

Also thought it's good idea to keep charger in case for the future.

    CTEK MXS 5.0

Should be right for both the car and bike.

    • Now will start looking for ozbargain price, thanks

Don't pay anything over $100. Sales come around fairly often.

  • Hard to go past the CTEK chargers. OzBargain’s charger of choice. When my old Arlec one dies, I’ll be replacing it with the CTEK.

As an alternative, for the bike, I use Oxford chargers as trickle/balance chargers as the bikes don’t get used as much as they cars., so they are always plugged in.

But if your car is getting used quite frequently and its battery is going flat, may pay to check the battery condition with a load tester and also check your alternator is charging at the right voltage. It may be a sign of other issues.

Get some Inox battery conditioner and top up your cells before you charge, it works wonders.

  • or some other reason which drained the battery

I'm no mechanic but that's surprising a 1 year old battery has this issue. I suspect something else is wrong. Alternator maybe?

Other half mentioned that light left on for couple of hours (4+), just find out.

CTEK are generally the go-to (i've got the .8 for my bike), but i've also read a heap of bad reviews on them. We use a jaycar one at work , think it was about $99 for a 4amp.

    Arlec make a good one
    They sell for under $50

Kmart have an unbranded one for just $27
    There is your answer
