Purchased Breville Mixer and Received KitchenAid (Twice)

I paid for a Breville stand mixer from eBay for $300 and a few days later, I received a $600 KitchenAid in my name. There was no invoice enclosed. Parcel came from a Harvey Norman.

I contacted the eBay seller and told him he accidentally sent me the wrong one. He apologised and said his supplier sent me the wrong one. He said I could keep the KitchenAid. Didn't think much of it when it first happened, thought it was a genuine error. Told eBay about it and they said it's fine- I can keep it.

I sold the KitchenAid and bought the Breville mixer I wanted again (from the same seller). Just got home and found I received another KitchenAid, from David Jones this time. An invoice was enclosed. Invoice says I placed the order from David Jones even though I did not. Both KitchenAids are a particular colour (not red).

What's going on here? Am I unknowingly benefiting from some criminal activity the seller is taking part of? What do I do?

Sounds like dropshipping going wrong. Not doing anything wrong and nothing you need to do. Enjoy.

      Once, maybe. Twice? Seems unlikely.

      • +2

most likely the picking slip for breville has the wrong product code with kitchenaid

        • At two different stores? Why does my ebay seller have two different suppliers for the same product?

  • +3

    Possibly triangulation fraud…weird though.

    • Why weird?

      • Because you're not receiving the items you bought.

    • What's triangulation fraud?

      • +1

        https://blog.clear.sale/what-is-triangulation-fraud

Triangulation fraud happens when an innocent customer makes a purchase on a third-party marketplace, but the item they receive was fraudulently purchased from yet another retailer’s website.

        Here’s how triangulation fraud happens:

A legitimate customer purchases an item through an auction or on a third-party marketplace.
The third-party marketplace seller (who is also the fraudster) places an order with a genuine retailer for the same product the legitimate customer just ordered.
The fraudster uses stolen payment information (often purchased from the dark net) to pay for the transaction.
The legitimate e-commerce retailer processes the fraudster’s order, shipping it to the legitimate customer’s shipping address provided during checkout
The innocent customer receives the actual item they ordered.

Sounds like an upgrade; KitchenAid has more attachments available.

Hybroid is right; it's dropshipping gone wrong. Just as well DJs don't send the receipt with the parcel any more like they used to, otherwise you'd find out how much they paid for it (although you probably could by going onto their website).

Source: seen it at DJs when I used to work there; been happening for years

    • I don't want a KitchenAid though.

I understand if it happened once. It's happened twice now. Isn't it more likely to be triangulation fraud?

      • +4

Then buy it from a different seller instead of this one, as clearly they’d rather you have a KitchenAid …

As for the fraud part, no idea. Maybe they want to rack up credit card points. You could report it to DJs if you want so that their online account and IP addresses are blacklisted

I cannot comprehend the dialect you choose to vocally use in a public sphere. I must say, this conundrum is turning into a right old kerfuffle. A mockery of our standards, I say. Good day, gentlemen. I feel inclined to indicate that the manner in which you speak seems rather pointed and brash.

    • How do I check on their website?

      • Look up the model number of the Breville mixer you bought on the respective retailer's website …

        • Can you explain this a bit more? I don't understand.

          • @unknown91: Well for starters, the cheapest price I've found at Bing Lee is $399. Even if they were using someone's staff discount to buy it online (it's 10% for small appliances at DJs), that's still not $335 … So it looks like they're losing money, but why?

            • +1

@kerfuffle: Oh I see what you mean you mean about checking their website. I thought you were talking about something else.

Ripper, I wish someone was sending me numerous free KitchenAid mixers.

    • What's your address? I'll send you one of mine.

      • +1

The actual mixer or an ms paint diagram of one?

        • +2

Send your residential address for a physical unit.

Send your email address for nudes MS Paint diagram of KitchenAid.

          • @Muzeeb: How many different KitchenAid do you own?

            • +4

@brendanm: I've lost count. This dude called David Jones just keeps sending them to me. I leave the house and when I return there is a new one waiting for me on the verandah.

              • @Muzeeb: David sounds like a top bloke! I hope he is at least sending different colours.

  • +2

If you want a world of pain ask David Jones and Harvey Norman about it and give them the tracking numbers. They would have gotten their chargebacks by now…

Your address may end up blacklisted by both companies too.

    • I will end up on their blacklist if I ask them about it?

      • +1

Your address shouldn't. But the seller's IP address and account will be. DJs Online has a term somewhere saying that you can't resell their stuff for commercial purposes.

Source: ex-staff who also has been blacklisted, but for another thing

        • So do you recommend contacting DJ about it or no?

          • @unknown91: Yes because i) he's breaching the terms and conditions and ii) his 'supplier' screwed you twice. Tell them what you told us, that this KitchenAid showed up at your house that you didn't order (since you were expecting a Breville mixer) and it seems like they're dropshipping. Make sure you give them the order number when you do that

            • @kerfuffle: I will call them tomorrow.

Will I be expected to return it? (I already sold the first one- it was from HN though)

              • @unknown91: Good question. Most likely, but make sure they remimburse you for postage if you have to send it back.

Could always try return it in store and claim your friend got it as a gift (your packing slip will cover this story) and get a DJs gift card in exchange (and not tell them the story about your dodgy seller), then use said gift card to buy The Bakery Boss in store (however it might be sold out going by a quick squiz online). What's the model number you got of the KitchenAid out of curiosity?

                • +1

                  @kerfuffle: I'd rather not do that. 5KSM150PSACU

Won't my name and address now be blacklisted by HN and DJ?

Should I ask my ebay seller about this second Kitchenaid?

                  • @unknown91: You're the innocent party. If you get blacklisted, that's not fair. But you can get off the blacklist at DJs if you ask nicely (which is how I got off it when I was on it, but I was guilty unlike you).

You can if you want, to see what he says, and ask them why it came from HN and DJs

                    • @kerfuffle: What will happen if I do nothing?

                      • +1

@unknown91: You end up stuck with a KitchenAid you don't want and which you'll have to sell/get rid of again. You don't have to if you don't want to, but if I were you, I would as you got screwed twice by this eBay seller.

                        • @kerfuffle: That's true but a kitchenaid is worth a lot more than a Breville stand mixer.

                          • @unknown91: Then just sell it and buy a Breville mixer from an actual retailer like Bing Lee with the money

                            • @kerfuffle: I’m worried I’m currently blacklisted by DJ and HN for this though?

                              • @unknown91: You'll find if you're blacklisted by DJs if you order something, only to find that your order is cancelled within minutes, speaking from personal experience. Everything I ordered from tea to vacuum cleaners was cancelled. I highly doubt you're blacklisted though because you were an unwitting party to this dropshipping thing though

    • What do you mean they would have gotten their chargebacks by now?

  • +3

    Possible triangulation fraud.

  • Is the seller still selling it? I can only find legit sellers right now. Do you buy from this old listing? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BIG-DISCOUNT-Breville-The-Bakery…

    • Yes that's the one.

  • Drop shipping, the new middle man rort. It used to be the distributor network that scammed off profits between the manufacturer and the retailer, they move just shifted their model to handling cash for profit. They are a blight on the online sales platforms. Happy to take your money, skin some off then when something goes wrong the supplier gets stiffed.

  • Are you wanting to sell the second Kitchenaid? I'm in the market for one…

    • +1

Yes if I get to keep it…

      I just want a Breville mixer :(

      • Did you choose the Breville based on Choice by any chance? I notice it’s their #1 recommended Mixer. I was personally considering either Kenwood or KitchenAid.

Interested as to why you prefer the Breville The Bakery.
        Cheers

        • No that's not why I chose Breville.

The Breville has features I always wanted and didn't even know I wanted. It has a timer (super convenient when you're doing other things in the kitchen), stopwatch- I often get my phone out to time my mixer, electric speed dials (it's 2020, we shouldn't have to use a manual lever anymore), LED lights, spotlight for the bowl (seems unnecessary but I can't tell you how many times I've struggled to see inside my bowl when baking at night).

On top of that, I felt kinda basic getting a KitchenAid like everyone else.

Things to consider is reliability and colour options. KitchenAid has proven undeniable reliability, not sure about Breville's stand mixer. KitchenAid also has 100's of colour options whilst the Breville only has 2 options (or you can do what I plan on doing and spray paint it yourself!).

          • @unknown91: Thanks for this information. Kitchenaid has a lot of value from the fact that most people Have had theirs for many many years.

I do feel kitchenaid looks nicer, but worried if I buy a Breville or kenwood and it doesn’t last I’ll hear about it!

Stopwatch and timer are indeed useful, but as you said, you can use your phone for that. Just an extra step and spending more for less functionality is counter intuitive

    • Thanks that was quite informative

    • This does seem to be the case with a few listings. Really interesting situation and amazed it’s a new thing really
