Best PC Survival Game? Still DayZ?

I'm returning to gaming due to lockdown. I last gamed in 2014 when I mainly played DayZ Mod, MechWarrior: Living Legends and PlanetSide 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed DayZ Mod and I'm looking for a similar experience. There was nothing like the rush of stalking a dude for an hour, waiting for him to stop in a building, line up a shot through a window, one shot him in the head and loot his body from the floor.

Gameplay attributes I seek:

  • Survival
  • Open world
  • Exploration
  • Looting
  • Moderate PVE
  • Light PVP
  • Persistent world
  • Permadeath
  • Beautiful scenery

I've been playing GTA V and Fortnite. Fortnite is quite good but it's a bit too short and wacky with the build fighting. I previously played Raft but it quickly got tedious. The only task at sea is to continually repair your raft from shark damage which is trivial once you have nets. And on the large islands, it's just an elementary land-based survival game.

I was eagerly anticipating H1Z1 as a fan of both DayZ and PlanetSide 2. But it seems I missed that game entirely! What happened to it?

I'm currently downloading Ark and considering PUBG and Rust. How are DayZ Mod and Standalone currently? What do people recommend?

Ark Survival is now free on Epic Games. Grab now while you can 😁

    • yep have always wanted to play but have not enjoyed other survival games and didn't want to waste the cash on another one so glad to finally try this for free

  • 7 Days to Die is such an underrated game if you have a group of people to play it with it's even better.

That's quite a list you have there.

I can't think of any game that has all of those attributes. The hardest part is the light PVP and moderate PVE.
Most BR games tick the boxes of everything else (except the beautiful scenery!)

I haven't played it, but Escape from Tarkov may be your calling. It's a slower paced game where you can, as you described, stalk people and loot their bodies.

DayZ has them all, but covering most is fine.

I've read a little on here about Tarkov, I'll check it out thanks.

  • metal gear solid 5, sans permadeath/survival. great open world, plenty of hours to put into it, base building and good customisation, you'll skill up in your play style as you progress, and its $5.

  • Can you get your hands on a PS4? Even if borrowed. Days Gone is really really good and should be right up your street.
