This gen is a massive leap. It's like going from ps2 to ps3. It's not just graphics, there will be no more loading! Imagine 5 years from now going back to fire up a ps4 or even gaming on current pc titles. We won't have the patience to wait for the loading screens lol. Memes will be made.

      • +1

I don't believe so. When I look at the games they showcased, they could have easily been a PS4 game.
Loading times isn't something that's going to make me want to upgrade to next gen. That's partly driven by using SSD in lieu of HDD. Not something that really excites me in terms innovation for gaming. I can't remember that many games that annoyed me with extended loading times anyway.

        • +1

Did you ever play Bloodborne or GTA V? Bloodborne had around 60 sec loading per death and GTA V took forever (let alone more for online).

The forced SSD also will change how games are designed and made and has interesting implications for PC games in the future. The ratchet and clank demo showed it well and could not be made with current gen hardware.

          • +1

@nomoneynoproblems: I said not that many games had ridiculous loading times. If you install SSD on PS4, the problem becomes even less significant.
I did play Bloodborne and finished it but it was a long time ago now so can't remember how much of an issue loading time was with that game.

As I said, for me, these factors don't really excite me. IMO game industry hasn't seen innovative games in a long time. It's always the same old formula with different story and background.

Ratchet and Clank? Been done to death.. loading time was never an issue with this game for me.

            • +1

@keejoonc: While SSDs improved loading for some titles, it wasn't always significant and varied from titles. The point of a hi speed ssd wasn't just to cut out loading times but to fix everything that's holding back game design and dismissing the ps5 leap as "isn't as big as the leap from PS3 to PS4" is factually wrong. Platformers like ratchet and clank may have been done to death but the instant transmission between worlds is brand new and I'm excited as to what creative minds bring to the table. This next generation of games will usher in some amazing games.

              • +1

@nomoneynoproblems: Factually? Fact according to who? You? At least when PS4 was announced, there were some wow factors in terms how much better games looked over PS3. I don't get any of that with PS5.

Games have been repetitive and lacking innovation for a very long time. Doesn't mean all recent games were boring to play but, if you had the privilege of experiencing gaming from the 90's onwards, you will understand what I mean.

I really don't understand what you expect when you say instant transmission between worlds will bring about some massive change in game design etc. Happy to be pleasantly surprised, but other than seamless transition, I can't think how this will bring about groundbreaking improvements and innovation to gaming.

                • @keejoonc: Factually according to game devs. https://www.t3.com/au/news/new-ps5-tech-will-transform-gamin…

While I agree most mainstream games have been following the same tried and tested formulas, there have been some amazing innovative games, especially in the VR and switch space. (Statik, astrobot, superhot)

I grew up in the 90s. My first console was the ps1 and seeing the transition from blocky 3d games to hi def has been awesome. Don't take my word for it, have a look at what developers are saying about next gen consoles. Ps3 and ps4 share the same 5200rpm laptop drives still. Imagine the possibilities when they go straight to nvme ssd drives. It will be amazing and I can't wait.

              • @nomoneynoproblems: It's even more than just loading times, PS5 is using PCIe 4 ssd for massive read speeds, 99% of people don't even have these in their PC yet, it's so fast it's even being used like a cache for RAM in the PS5, meaning so much game data is available on demand you not only have no loading but you can jump entire areas on the fly.

        • I agree there wasn't anything in the presentation that excited me or made me drop my jaw and say wow this is next gen.

However I do think that this console will be a significant generational leap over PS4 in terms of raw performance and graphical fidelity. We've never had consoles that do can do real-time hardware accelerated ray tracing and when we start to see this in the hands of first party experienced developers such as Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studios I believe it will be like night and day when comparing to the previous generation.

This video really stood out to me as what the PS5 is capable of once we get through the teething period. While I'm a bit disappointed it's still 30fps I think it's leaps and bounds above anything possible in the current generation.

I totally agree with your point around innovative games and I don't see them offering anything new from what they've shown so far, however I'm hoping to be proven wrong when more titles are announced and we get to see a bit more of the games they have already previewed. For now I think I will pick up a PS5, but it will be somewhere down the line and based off the games they actually put out.

Have 2,300 games in my Steam account. EPIC keep giving away free games. I think I can wait until it's $429

I will wait till they do an all black version, not a fan of the white

  • Expressions of Interest now live at ebgames: https://www.ebgames.com.au/expression-of-interest/ps5

    • well when it's up, it's up. There's no real advantage to sign up to that. When it's really ready for preorders, we will see it all over the place.

  • Meh just get a current gen console and get cheap preowned games.

I bought an Xbox one and a bunch of games at launch, the Xbox was $650 from memory. I was a kid and didn’t realise how computers depreciate. I won’t be doing it again.

    • You had it early on though, that’s got to be worth something.

YOLO. If you died in 12 months time you'd regret not having the PS5 in your life for longer.

    • Yeah…. Assuming that there was an afterlife and you could actually regret things I'm guessing ps5 would be it.

      • Absolutely. On my deathbed all my missed gaming opportunities will flash before my eyes.

  • +2

Sony was caught faking game footage for both the PS3 and the PS4. Multiple times.
I'd definitely wait until release to actually see what the games actually look like.
We also need clarification on backwards compatibility. Some information says it's going to be mostly universal (since it's just another AMD x86 APU) and others say it will be reliant on system updates (making it more like XBOX ONE's interpretation of what backwards compatibility means).

    • Since the ps3 era they haven't faked anything, if anything they improved when the game was released. See comparison with spiderman and tlou 2.

      • They literally faked Uncharted 4 and Battlefield.

        • Source? Never heard of it. I know there was massive backlash regarding motorstorm and killzone back in the ps3 era, which you'd think they would have learned their lesson so I'm surprised I never heard about this u4 and bf debacle.

always keep these in case people forget the past.

Also just in case anyone thinks I'm a fanboy, Microsoft has been caught cheating a few times too:
            https://imgur.com/a/JjtPtRI

            • @tyme: Eh that bf one was a blimp and wasn't much in it. The u4 example was close to the actual game despite that scene never making it into the game.

              https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HCNyuomzVu8

All the major players do it so I'm not concerned.

              • @nomoneynoproblems: "All the major players doing it" is just another reason to wait for release instead of preordering in advance.
The console can only stand to get cheaper and with more games.
When it's actually in the hands of consumers, trusted sources like you posted will put the system through its paces and give you a clearer view of what the hardware is capable of.

Literally all you get from preordering is bragging rights that you had one on day 1.
And that's not worth a whole lot, I don't hear many PS4 owners bragging about how they go the original big+loud version of the system over the Pro and slim.

  • Real friends don't let each other pre-order games, let alone potato boxes.

Nah, going with Xbox this time around. The specs on PS5 are terrible compared and the exclusive games they showed at their show were all playing at 30FPS, not to mention the massive framedrops in the Rachet and Clank trailer (which you can see on YouTube), that was embarrassing. Sony even confirmed that they are targetting 30FPS across their exclusives. Then you got Microsoft out there being like… Oh no, we're targetting 60-120FPS… Which is what next gen is about. Ain't wasting money on a system that doesn't take it's games seriously. Xbox have got it this gen

    • +1

That's because 30FPS is going to be the norm at 4k though, right?

No way the next xbox is playing demanding games in 4k at 120 FPS.

      • There's a good Microsoft will showcase Forza Motorsport 8 at 120fps. Whether that's 4k 120fps or at a reduced resolution, they often use FM to showcase graphics. FM7 plays at 4k native 60fps on the Xbox One X. That said, I'd rather they just focus on a solid 4k 60fps.

    • "the exclusive games they showed at their show were all playing at 30FPS"

The live stream was streaming at 1080p30, that's why. Some games were confirmed to be running at 60fps. You'll need to watch the game trailers on their youtube channel and you'll see a good number at 4K even and 60fps.

      • Look at expert analysis like Digital foundry for example. The Rachet and Clank trailer is a very good example, first, you see massive amounts of frame drops in the trailer, secondly. They also confirm that it's running at 4K but automatically down scales to keep the frames, which you can also evidently see in that trailer.

Furthermore, Xbox have confirmed their main target is 4K 120FPS for most of their games, the gears 5 Tech demo is a very good example of it. It's flawless

        • I wouldn't put too much into a trailer. The video but not be recorded well and drops frames? I don't know. The game is also still in development. I'm positive it'll play perfectly at release. The PS4 Ratchet and Clank played flawlessly, so I imagine this one would play the same.

Regarding Xbox, we'll have to wait for the July event to judge, that's hoping they do finally show us gameplay.

  • Have to! I'm a gamer!

  • I won't be pre-ordering but I will buy one once GTA6 comes out.

I remember when PS4 launched and at the time I was working for dicksmith. Bought a couple of them just so I could sell at a profit to the rich parents who weren't able to get one for their kids in time for Christmas. You reckon it will be the same this time around for the PS5? For me personally, the only game I have really enjoyed on a console was Final fantasy 7 remake. Until part 2 of FF7 remake gets released I don't see a reason for me to buy a PS5

  • +1

How about a 'nah, can't afford it'

  • I waited 6 months after Switch release before buying. Even got it like $25 cheaper. Will probably wait the same amount of time for PS5/New Xbox.
