        • What's mid range about this?

If it's better than the Inspiron 3583 starting at $629 (w/ Pentium Gold Processor 5405U, Windows 10 Home S mode, 4 GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 802.11ac 1x1), then it's not "bottom of the barrel".
          https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-300…

That's because Inspiron 3000 Series is bottom of the barrel, or whatever you want to call it. Inspiron 5000 Series is a step up, so that makes it mid-range in the 3 sub-model lineup (7000 Series being top dog in the lineup).

          • @1bug: Yeah it's not literally the worst thing you can buy. But at $1100 it should be more than just meh, because you're paying a few hundred extra $ over something like the 3000, ThinkPad E595 etc and starts creeping into or over the price of stuff like the Lenovo other people posted which has some more premium parts

I'm not sure what about the 5000 is all that different to the 3000. The 7000 I see. But the 3000? Smaller bezels? Idk.

Thanks for the great explanation (wish Dell made it this clear ;-)

Can you please explain different between Consumer and Business grade laptops, generally speaking? Particularly, better or worse value? Why would one go for consumer vs business?

        • +1

Business grade laptops tend to be higher quality. e.g. Latitude 5xxx will be better than Inspiron 5xxx.
They will tend to have things like VGA ports (almost gone now), wired ethernet (disappearing) and TB3 ports.
They usually cost more and don't have deep discounts.
They may have better warranty as standard.

      • The bottom line is that it seems like a great bargain because of the "discount" from the RRP. But the RRP is over double what the thing is worth. So it's no bargain at all. But Dell's strategy worked.

  • wow so many negs? why?

  • Does anyone know any good deal for a lighter laptop? Thx

I prefer this Dell over the others currently on offer on ozb. The specs are second to none.

    • +1

I agree, the specs are good, including the processor. Have been waiting for a long time to buy a laptop (high end specs, and lower price) to replace my nearly 10 year old laptop, and just bought this one.

At the end it depends on the purpose of the laptop.
For me, for home use (no gaming though), this is more than enough.

  • Looking good, how would people rate this against the E15 pad in terms of value?

How does this compare to the Dell Inspiron 15" 7591?

    Just saw the post above:

"7000 Series - high-end (includes some premium components like alloy chassis, and hi-tech features like Thunderbolt 3)."

Dell seems to have so many models with prices jumping around so much it's difficult to compare and make an informed decision (at least, that's my view).

I don't understand the negs myself, but each to their own.

Like it or hate it, but for an everyday workhorse laptop which will get a few years of punishment from a set of teenagers on a daily basis doing their assignments then this is a decent deal for ~$1000. Parents out there understand the difficulty buying the latest and greatest, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons of a product and make a decision. The 5000 series may not be the top of the line, but its actually built surprising well and is a lot more durable compared to its competitors.

Weak battery and terrible screen make it inappropriate for students. Young people should learn what good quality looks like. It's part of their education.

    • I hope the students aren't doing any kind of graphics assignments because the colour accuracy of this screen is appalling.

i just bought this HP from JB https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-pavilion-x360-14-dh101…

should i be taking it back and getting the DEll? just general video wathing and internet'n

Personally I would return as the HP only has HD (720p) display and the Dell has FHD (1080p)

  • FYI, just hopped on chat and are saying 1 month for delivery..

  • What is the take on the warranty? Do we need to take a premium warranty to get everything covered - basic warranty doesn't seem to cover much

  • Purchased for $1,170.86 previously.

Is there a way to cancel the order and buy again at the cheaper price?

    • +1

Here is what they said to me. I originally purchased from dell ebay.

"Thank you for reaching out to us.

The Dell.com.au and the Dell eBay store are two separate channels which sell different products, prices and promotions. We are given fixed prices by our head office and are not able to price match with the Dell store or offer further discounts. Apologies for this.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide partial refunds. However, we can work on cancelling your order and provide you with a full refund so that you can repurchase the item directly on the official website. At the moment, the unit is already onboard for delivery with StarTrack: xxxxxxxxxx (https://startrack.com.au/track/search). You can reject the parcel so we can instruct the courier to return the unit back to us. Or we can arrange a recollection of the item from your address if you are unable to reject the delivery. Once the item is received back in our warehouse, we will process the refund for the order. Please let us know how you wish to proceed."

Couldn't be bothered in the end. Wait times were too long.

      • Thanks for the detailed post. I guess like you, I'll just take the hit $58 hit. Still a good deal regardless.

    EPP5 doesnt' work anymore

  • Both coupon codes work BUT not at the same time :( Can't double dip

  • Did anyone else who purchased this with both discount codes get an email from Dell asking them to reply from their work or student email address (not used for the order) with the delivery address mentioned for the order? Seemed like an odd request, and no specific reason was given - haven't done it yet. Googling suggests that maybe the codes were linked to some work/student offer?

    • +1

Hi @shma I got it using both discounts and no I didn't get any such email

      • Thanks for the response! It's such a weird request so I might ignore it for now. The order is confirmed and the status is "Shipped - In transit to local hub" so maybe it wasn't important anyway.

    • Got same email too. Replied with minimum info required. order status is "shipped" now. No reply from the email though

      • Cheers, glad I wasn't alone in getting the email.

This deal is still on but you can't stack the codes anymore - Comes up as $1,170.86 now
