Parking in NSW

my understanding of parking in NSW is that there must me two signs, start and end. For example, a no stopping sign must have one "No stopping" at one end arrow pointing (say right) and the other point to the opposite direction, left.

Has that changed? I can't find anything online.

Thanks!

If you're at an intersection and the arrow for a "no stopping" sign is pointing towards the intersection, there won't be a second sign.

    • No intersection, just normal parralel parking.

        So the road is never-ending?

        • No but there is another no stopping sign pointing towards the intersection

@D6C1: A single no-stopping sign in either direction can suffice to say "no stopping anywhere to the left (or right) of this sign until the intersection."

If they want to end the "no stopping rule" and allow for stopping or parking, then obviously they need to put another no stopping sign up with an arrow pointing in the opposite direction.

    Dear OP.

Yes your parking fine is valid. Please make sure to pay by the allotted time to avoid any unnecessary fees and penalties.

    • Who said I got a fine?

    Nope.

No, that would mean there would need to be multiple signs before and after every driveway…

  • I can't find anything online.

You looked at this page? https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/par…

Also I think these are relevant sections in the legislation…

And note that a "parking control sign" is defined to include a no stopping sign.

In the wrong. Pay the infringement.

Its normal for there to be a sign at both ends, but it isn’t a requirement. Normal for there to be an ‘end’ sign at a change of parking conditions to prevent issues with people contesting fines. It’s normal for there to be be no sign when to road changes significantly, like at an intersection.

    AS1742.11 from memory…

The road rules state that signs apply to a length of road. If there is a start sign, I wouldn't park anywhere between that sign and the next intersection…

The RMS usually describe dual carriageway separate to unseparated roads, so it may be the length of road stops at a change from single to dual carriageway as well. I wouldn’t be keen to test that theory unless I thought it might help me get it if a ticket (that I’m unlikely to get because I wouldn’t risk it).

No sign is required with parking near an intersection.
The law clearly states you cannot park within 10m of an intersection.

Amazing how many people dont know this one and its one of the most expensive fines now….$340 plus 2 demerit points.

There is also a minimum distance from any double line in the middle of the road to ensure cars can pass safely. Again no sign is required.

And the fact you must park facing the direction of the traffic.

So dear OP there are many situations where no sign is required at all.
So dont assume because there is no sign it means you can park there.

Within 3m of the centreline. May even apply to non double lines.

  • I ended up not parking there and took a video to illustrate the signs. Unfortunately can't seem to play!
