Portable/Pocket AM/FM Radio

Hi

I am currently looking for a decent AM/FM portable/pocket radio.

There doesn't seem to be much choice out there and i am not sure if i should just get a cheap $10 one or spend a bit more.

It is going to be used for when i go fishing/camping.

Cheers

Buy a cheapie and you can throw it away when you inevitably drop it in the water.

    • Was gonna say the same, just get a cheapie from Kmart so if something bad happens to it you won't care.

      • Great minds think alike eh?

  • Headphones or do you want external speaker?

  • Target has some on clearance at my local store. Philips model was $20 now $10.

Also you can go into a few different stores and test them out. Harvey Norman, JB HiFi and Good Guys all have a range.

For something decent JBL has this portable bluetooth speaker with FM radio which is currently $99 at Catch and is normally over $120… https://www.catch.com.au/product/jbl-tuner-portable-bluetoot… That might be more worth it for the price considering it's brand name and dual functions. It has a telescopic antenna and there's a good review here… https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/product/jbl-tuner-portable-dab-…

Phones often have FM radio capability. It's often disabled, but there may be apps to re-enable it, depending on your model.

    • They normally require headphones to be attached to act as an antenna though, which isn't really practical for fishing/camping.

I think you should be able to set the audio output to speaker, even with headphones in. Depends on the phone

        • Yes, absolutely correct.

Listening right now on my Xiaomi phone. Headphones plugged in, very easy to select 'listen on speaker' in radio app.

  • Tescun make excellent radios. Not a cheap option but very good quality.

  • Just get this one:

I’ve had it for ages. Perfect for cricket

This is the one i will probably get but going to look at the cheapies in Big W first.

      • I bought mine nearly 20 years ago and looks like the design hasn’t changed. The speaker and build quality are good. I got it from JB.
