If you aren't 100% on using Google Wear, I would highly recommend the Samsung watches. I paid $415 a few months back for the Gen 5 Carlyle, and to be honest I don't think I would pay over $200 for it after owning it for a month. I ended up selling it.

Google Wear definitely has its shortcomings, but it's worth pointing out that Samsung's watches work much better with Samsung phones than with other brands of Android devices, and many of the Samsung Watch functions require the use of Samsung's other platforms (Bixby and Samsung Pay, for instance).

Given the nature of battery degradation in small mobile devices like watches, I would suggest that paying $300+ for a smart watch (of any brand) is not a very good idea - it will almost certainly be virtually useless after 2 or 3 years of usage once battery life is reduced to less than 1 day.

I am using Google now on my active 2, also using Samsung Pay through my Pixel 4

Also my Gear S2 Classic of nearly 4 years of daily use is only just starting last only a single day ;-)

I have realised that most of these watches are just for fun, most people I know bought it and then it ended up on gumtree/facebook or in a drawer. The tech. in them isn't that accurate (apart from pedometer & weather), fiddling with phones is often required, charging daily, battery starts to degrade in a few months & finally it makes you look nerdy. Best to get standard watch/es for daily wear & fitness bands for exercise. you save a lot and still look classy.
