I'm Moving to Hawaii! Has Anyone Got a K1 Visa before?

Hi everyone!
I'm planning to move to Hawaii for a year to be with my partner, we plan to get married in the next year and I wanted to know what's the best way to obtain a visa - I've heard about the K1 visa but would love some advice on how long it takes to get the visa, as well as if there's another way to move there using another visa. I am over 30 unfortunately so I won't be able to obtain a working visa, and I won't be able to get a job sponsorship through work (I'm a teacher too).
Thanks for your help!

Just a heads-up, these are the current restrictions on leaving Australia:

Depends when you are planning to leave; these may / may not be relevant to you.

Thanks for this. Yeah I plan to go next year… restrictions will most likely lift then anyway. Fingers crossed.

  • Takes 6-9 months for a K1 visa, maybe longer at the moment

    • I read about that :( fingers crossed it won’t be though.

    green card marriage, noice

    • Lol im planning to go for a year before settling down back here for good.. think green card will take a while though.

  • You could try the E3 visa if you have a degree? https://www.ustraveldocs.com/au/au-niv-typee3.asp. You need a job offer and a degree in your field but it does not require sponsorship.

Search for “Australians in the US” on facebook or Aussies in Hawaii etc.

I believe there are things you need to do as a teacher to get qualified so if I were you that would be my first step.

https://americajosh.com/ Is a good resource as well.

I would contact a immigration lawyer ASAP. You’ll need one.

    • Thanks for this. Yeah I tried looking up this visa however i don’t think I’ll be eligible seeing the visa comes out every April and I’ve missed the cut off for next year already. Plus there’s not many of them; approx 10500 a year. :( thanks for the suggestion with the blog though! I will check it out.

      • The E3 is available all year around. Don’t know where you got April from.

Also out of the 10,500 we actually use roughly half. Read Josh’s blog! If your fiancée can help you get a interview and you can explain what the visa is (read the blog) then you can get it. The problem is, it is very hard with embassy’s being closed and Trump threatening to end immigration.

The US is easily the hardest place to immigrate to. It would be easier for your fiancée to come here (assuming of course you have met them and can prove your relationship is valid)… It possibly isn’t a terrible option. Then in the meantime you can talk to lawyers and figure out the best way. It isn’t like the UK or Canada where there are WHVs that can lead to sponsorship. The US doesn’t do that.

THe other thing you could look at is the Green card lottery. You’d be applying for 2022 though.

  • Hawaii teachers are the worst paid in the US and it is the most expensive state to live or buy a house. You know what you’re getting in to?

Yeah I know it’s shit teaching there, but I just need the visa to live there and to be with my partner. if it’s reaaaaally bad I’ll work in another field- just need the visa to legally stay /work there in Hawaii.
