Lenovo Yoga C940 vs HP Spectre x360 (late 2019)

Narrowed my options down to these two options for a 2-in-1.
Both with 4K screens, Gen 10 i7 1065 processors and 512GB and 16GB RAM.
Lenovo offers the additional screen realestate at 14" and built in stylus and am warming up to this option.
Any further advice on either on these two models ?

Thanks in advance :)

  • I have the late 2019 x360 spectre in 1080p screen, i7 1TB SSD however i must say the screen does annoy me as it's 16:9 and bottom bezel is outragesly thick compare to new XPS 13 and macbook pro 13 2020, but apart from these it's a beast of machine, the specs are at the top of Ultrabook, HP's customer serivce is hit and miss it can be painful though but let's see what happen down the track.

The tablet mode to be honest is a bit buggy and HP Pen has a 0.5ms lag from my experience, i have apple pencil with iPad Pro it has zero latency so this will make a difference.

Battery is top though it can last a full day of light use without charge at 30% screen brightness and battery save mode, i mainly watch Netflix and browse web so battery life is awesome.

Keyboard is top as well, i had a surface laptop 3 before and this one is just as good, trackpad can be on the samller side but it's fast and responsive.

Audio quality and loudness is average.

Overall X360 spectre 2019 is a beautiful machine and will stand out from a sea of usual boring look of Ultrabooks.

    • Thanks ! Agreed with the look of it but not so much on the colours. The 4K version was a bright silver at JB and it didn't wear well and the HD version was a weird blue/copper. It will stand out nevertheless.

  • I do love my C940. Thunderbolt issues with docks is a major pain

    • Thanks - would you mind elaborating on the issue mentioned please?

      • I mentioned it in another recent post. I'm on my fifth dock of different brands - various issues but mostly it won't wake a monitor after sleep and it's a hassle unplugging, plugging back in, turning the monitor on and off, different combinations of the sequence and sometimes needing to restart. With the most recent dock I can't turn on the laptop while it's connected. I have read many instances of these lenovo thunderbolt issues online. Another ozbargain user reported that it works flawlessly with his Dell dock.

Aside from this issue I love it. My last laptop was a Vaio 13 which I adored. The C940 was the first laptop that caught my attention.

        • Thanks for that.

This is coincidence as I'm also looking for a replacement for my beloved Sony Vaio 13 that now has some intermittent screen flashing issues. Considering getting it repaired but not sure if it is worth doing so.
The C940 feels more "solid" and I do like the look of it.
Mind sharing what you paid for the C940 and if you bought direct from lenovo ?

          Cheers

          • @GammaMelb: I paid $2396 from Harvey Norman for the i7, FHD, 16GB model. I would dismantle the Sony and attempt to tighten the screen cable connection - it's probably a very simple fix and you could at least then sell it. I sold my i5 for $400. It's not too hard to work on. I opened mine up quite a few times over the years to tighten the hinge. I agree that the C940 is very solid feeling which is nice, although not after you open it up. I replaced the SSD with a 1 TB and ever since I put it back together it's made creaking noises when I handle it which drives me mad. I broke a couple of the tiny plastic clips that Lenovo uses to hold the base together in lieu of a a decent number of screws (just one at each corner and a couple under the rubber strip - older Yogas have more). If you ever open it be freaking careful. I'm not sure I even know how to advise you on removing the base. They've unfortunately made it quite a shit job and I've learned to look out for plenty of screws when buying a laptop in the future.

            • @mitch01: Thanks ! Will attempt the Sony fix once I get my C940…there may yet be life in the Vaio :)
Not sure about tinkering with the C940 tho, maybe after the warranty expires in 4 years.

        • In regards to the dock, I'm using the Alogic VPLUCMDHD-SGR (https://www.alogic.co/alogic-usb-c-portable-docking-station-…). It is working well. I've plugged in the monitor via the HDMI, wakes up when I open the C940 and also get power through it, adds a couple of USB ports plus the SD card slot. Best thing is that it's got a small foorprint.

Unfortunately, its end of line and the equivalent looks like the ULDPLS-SGR (https://www.alogic.co/catalog/product/view/id/4033/s/alogic-…).
Hopefully the updated model works just as well and quite a few $$ cheaper than the Dell D6000.

          Hope this helps.

  • I have an older version of the Yoga and would buy it over an HP any day. Do you need the 4K screen? I went with the full HD version as don't see much benefit to that high a resolution on such a small screen, and the battery life was significantly better with the FHD version. Haven't looked at the updated version so perhaps there's not such a large difference any more.

    • Thanks. Only going for the 4K screen because of immediate availability - otherwise a 4-6 week wait. The battery life hit was considered with the 4K but I usually have the laptop powered in as used as my primary PC at home.

      • Fair enough, I use mine almost exclusively on power and then just plug in at the end of the day to charge overnight, so the 10hr+ real world battery life is very important. Looking at the Lenovo site, it looks like the 4k version is almost $1k more as well though, only other difference being 16Gb vs 8Gb RAM? Quite a price premium…

  • Here's a bit of an update after my first 24 hours with the C940. In short, I'm really loving it. Powers up fast, the 4K screen is stunning to view and the keyboard & trackpad joy to use. The laptop feels solid and you could open the screen with a finger. Then there is the sound. It's clear, loud and not tinny. So far, I haven't heard any fan noises either. The laptop does get slightly warm but it is comforting during these winter days :)
    A good experience so far.

    • Can I ask what you spent please? I went for an original Yoga 900 - a beast with i7/512Gb/16gb/QHD - but I missed a stylus and its "glitchy" turning on sometimes. Ithink the equivalent HP was just more expensive for those specs. I'm also after a docking station to run multiple monitors but my USB C is pretty de-tuned and won't do power so at least two cables will stay plugged in.

  • Well my HP comes with TB3, which is what i needed to hook up an external GPU :)
