What Questions to Ask A Business before Recommending a Software Accounting Package?

I wonder what would be a good 'screening' set of questions to ask a business before recommending them a software package?

Any package essentially but particularly one of the 'big four', say: Myob Essentials, Myob AccountRight, Xero and Quickbooks.

Looking at it from the vendor's end gives biased and incomplete information of course.

I think it would be very interesting to see such a list.

  • What types of services and software they use that can integrate with the accounting software. For example Bunnings, Officeworks and Deputy support MYOB data export.

  • +3

I thought the big 4 would've included SAP and Oracle.

  • The right and best software is easily decided by whoever pays your wages

  • "What's your Budget?"

"What are your expectations of the accounting system?"

"Do you see drastic business growth that may change your accounting system expectations in the next 5 years or so?"

"What systems has your accountant/finance manager used before and what system do they recommend/want?"

  • Integration into other modules / subledgers
    - Inventory
    - Fixed assets
    - Bank (automatic recs)
    - Payroll system
    - POS system
