Avis Car Rental - 7 Day Weekly Rental Plus Free Upgrade $186 ($26 Per Day)

280
TPPA004

Great 7 day deal from Avis using the current deal of rent 4 or more days and get one day free plus free upgrade to next available car category.

I’ve found better pricing during Covid-19 shutdown however this rate is still good and might be useful to some. I’ve found Avis to be relaxed with what car they give you vs category booked so the free upgrade might help you get a better sedan or even SUV even though you book a compact.

I use the Sydney CBD Avis location (World Square - 395 Pitt St) and deal with Chris who always looks after customers.

(Some airport or premium locations may charge additional location fees so make sure you check final price before booking)

Do you bother with insurance. I see the standard insurance that is part of the daily car hire rate has a $4500 excess. Do you get independent insurance?

You can get insurance with other credit card provider.

I just buy travel insurance when travelling domestic and that covers the car rental excess.

Companies like this have been accused of not being car rental agencies, but rather insurance brokers who throw in a car hire at a nominal charge. In other words, their insurance is very expensive. Having said that, if you're involved in crash (irrespective of whether you are at fault or not) it will be incredibly expensive. They will charge an 'accident fee', an insurance excess fee, and you may even be stung for a 'recovery fee' if the car isn't drivable and needs to be retrieved. There may be other fees involved, too, which will only add to the cost. Suddenly, a car that was a couple of hundred to hire ends up costing you $15K or more!

So, the short answer to your question is: insurance will help to reduce how much you pay in the event of a crash. How much you're willing to pay for that insurance is entirely your choice. Some people argue (like nightelves in this thread) that some credit cards automatically provide some level of coverage. You'll also find that most motoring clubs will also either include insurance or reduce the cost of buying it from the car rental company - e.g. RACQ membership gives you a reduction in the premiums when booking through Thrifty. You need to read the fine print, though, to see what is and isn't covered, and how much they'll cover.

The trouble with insurance is you never need it…until you need it. It's impossible to predict the future, and at the end of the day even if YOU are a perfect driver you can't be certain the person coming at you from the other direction is the same. I personally would never hire a car without some kind of insurance; I've been lucky in that I've never had a crash and needed to use it. Have I wasted money? Perhaps. But, if I ever do then I'll be damn glad I've got it.

(Apologies, this turned out to be a lot longer than I expected. Hopefully you'll get some benefit from it)

      • Agree 100%. I always make sure I have ZERO excess when driving hire car.

      • I did the Thrifty discount thru RACQ a few months ago. Took full insurance - it costs as much as the rental!

If you take full insurance, you don't have to bother with the scratch identification at the start, but it is very expensive.

      • My credit card covers up to $5000 excess on rental cars. It means if I’m involved in an accident while renting from Avis they could potentially charge me $4500 excess as per their rental agreement at which point I can claim this against my credit card - obviously I must have paid for the rental car with said credit card!

      • Perfect response, well done, same can be said about health insurance, sure you might think you are wasting money, but at the end of the day, if you have never needed it, it is an absolute blessing, but if you did need it, it's not going to cost you (potentially) everything.

    • I use a Amex Explorer Card whenever I book a rental. Covers upto $100k damage for any car - best insurance ever. Recently made a claim and got the full $350 reimbursed (no excess)

  • True story. Hired a van years ago. Girlfriend reversed with boot door open and whack!!! Straight into a no stopping sign. Bad dent.
When I returned the van I backed it right up to the wall and the employee didn't bother to check.

    • They didn't chase you up on that the next day?? Jeez, someone must've gotten fired for that.
