Does your induction turn off constantly?

I previously asked for recommendations re a new cooktop. We decided on induction and bought the Ikea cooktop which was $900.

Forward two weeks and hubby was changing a lightbulb in the rangehood and managed to remove screws to help him which resulted in the rangehood falling out onto my new cooktop.

So now we have to replace both the rangehood and the cooktop (yet again). Whilst using the induction cooktop for just two weeks I found it constantly turned off. Some people say this is a safety feature when water spills onto it. But sometimes it's just when I lift the lid and a few droplets end up on the cooktop.

I'm wondering if this is a common thing that I can expect to happen with all brands? I'd be really appreciative if you could share your experience. I know it heats up quicker but constantly turning off and having to wait a minute or two is really annoying.

I'm looking at buying the Westinhouse cooktop this time so any advice is greatly appreciated.. Thanks for reading.

Removing the rangehood to replace the globe is a new one.

    • … as is removing the rangehood to replace the cooktop :)

OP, where are the water drops falling to turn the cooktop off? Near the control panel? Did your husband install the cooktop himself? Are you sure it's on a correctly rated electrical circuit (induction uses more amps than ceramic)?

    • I'd like to know how "hubby" changes nappies.

Cleanup involves repainting the ceiling and replacing floorboards

  • Mine does if the pan isn't induction compatible.

A lot of induction cookers actually have a safety feature that turns hob off if it is not heating correctly.

  • I have an ikea induction stovetop and the only time it turns off is when something is on the control panel for too long. It warns me with some beeps and then eventually turns off.
Sounds like yours may have installation issues…

  • nope, unless there is a lot of water on the cooktop surface

Sounds like the water droplets are a fairly common problem, check the reviews.

  • Ditch the induction for gas, your food will be so much better.

Glib advice. Not every house/flat/unit can be prepared for gas unfortunately. Very expensive exercise to switch over to gas in a lot of scenarios.
As for your food being better…lol, get a grip.

      • Portable gas cookers exist. Although it would be annoying to replace cans constantly.

  • To the OP: We recently replaced a long term glass cooktop that did the job for 20+ years(a Kleenmaid) as kids were raised from nappies to P plates and out the door( just the two of us again) lol.

Me being a typical male I just nodded when the wife did a lot of research and decided on an induction cooktop from the goog guys on special for mid 1.2k's or something.

I didn't know that I'd have to ditch most of my long term favourite pans and woks. Then I began to learn about the sensors in these things and just like you I've learnt that spray, drops, spillage, wet fingers that wont operate the touch controls and various other things that will set these cooktops off.

I hate the thing with a passion, it's good points a few and it's bad points are many.

It will be a very very expensive exercise to have gas put on at this two story house with raked ceilings but I'm contemplating it such is my dislike of an induction cooktop.

    Good luck madam.

  • I prefer induction over any other stovetop ( except target tops but they are not suitable for home use) The control is even better than gas especially at low heat levels, don’t think I could go back to gas

    • That's interesting. I've not enjoyed the process so far. So you think it's better than gas? I think my wife will upvote you! lol.

  • I prefer it as it’s faster/ more efficient/ easier to clean than gas however have found some new tops to be overly sensitive to spills and just shut down. Also they need 4mm or higher twin + earth wiring or they won't perform properly.
