Porting to Boost

I have a friend who wants to move over to Boost mobile. He’s currently with Telstra paying month by month. I said he’d need to call Boost Customer Care and get a blank sim. When he called he was directed to their website so he bought a $150 prepaid sim. We tried calling customer care and after 50 minutes a Telstra employee answers and says we have to call Boost to see if they can help. Try calling them back tomorrow.

Can he solve this himself by buying an Optus $2 sim , porting to Optus and then porting to Boost? If so does he have to put any money on the Optus sim? How long before he can then port to Boost? Can this be done any time or are some days and times better than others? Any idea how long this should all take?

Thanks so much from a couple of dinosaurs!

You’ll need at least however much it costs to send an sms. When you port from one provider to another, you get sent an sms confirming that you have the service with you (so in your case, you would get an sms on your Telstra service when you go to Optus AND then when you go from Optus to boost, you’ll get one FROM Optus conforming you have the service). If you don’t reply to the sms, your service won’t be ported.

This is to prevent theft of mobile numbers

    • Ok. Thanks for that. Does any one know what the minimum amount I can load or can I try another provider like Amaysim?

      • AS "supasaiyan" mentioned above you just need credit to send SMS.

re: Replying to an SMS - this is not the case with Boost. I know because I ported to Boost yesterday. When you activate online, they send an SMS (to the service you wish to port) and then you type it into their webpage (rather than reply on handset).

  • Porting from Telstra to Boost will take a long time. Instead port from Telstra to any other provider who does not use Telstra network(Amaysim,Kogan,Vodafone,Optus..) and then port to Boost.

That wasn’t the case for me. I called Boost and it was done almost instantly. There was no need for me to port to a third party sim first.

Me too. Recently ported Telstra to Boost, done that day. Just needed a Boost SIM.

        • How recently was this ? Were you prepaid or postpaid as from my understanding it makes a difference.
Can anyone tell me after the first port is complete how long before I can do the next port?

@Sheila Dealer: If it’s a weekday then you just need to make sure the old SIM is dead and the new SIM is functioning, after the first port, before doing the next one.

If it’s a Sunday, you can submit the second port but it won’t go through until Monday. I’m not a fan of doing 2 ports on a Sunday as it can lead to issues if/when the second port is submitted before the 1st is finalised. I’ve seen a couple numbers lost this way.

If its a Saturday, it used to follow the rules of a weekday but it might be different. In which case, you’d need to port the 1st one on Saturday, then wait until Monday, for the 2nd, to be safe.

Can confirm this. Ported from Telstra postpaid to boost using a regular SIM starter pack last week. Didn't need a blank sim, just called boost and asked them to port my number.

  • He managed to contact Boost today and they took the details from his new sim. Port went through in about one hour. No blank sim required. Thank you all for your help, very much.
