To get this price you need to SELECT THE 8GB model listed as $1199 and select the upgrades. Selecting the 16gb off the bat is $5 more. And $5 is worth exactly $5, so you may as well.

There is reportedly a compromise on screen quality for these units but otherwise well regarded. Discount code needs to be applied so won't track with CR/SB.

            • @Digitalco: OK, build quality seems good. Metal (or metal feel?) lid, plastic bottom.

In my hands, feels little heavy. But put it on the scale, it's only 1.4 kg. The Dell Inspiron 5000 2 in 1 is 1.7kg but somehow feels a little bit lighter in my hands. Subjective thing.

No backlit keyboard but usual lenovo quality, no touch screen.

              Speaker sounds good.

Display was tested in the evening indoors, doesn't look that bad.

The webcam cover is good, but takes a finger nail to operate. Not suitable for big fingers.

No Windows Hello face login, but can use fingerprint login.

Power brick is molded together with the plug. Can be a plus or minus.

No hardware and software tests done yet.

P.S. Spec says backlit keyboard, may need to check again.

              • @FireStallion: I think the backlight kb is Fn + Spacebar, Can you try that?

                • @dazzsser: Yes, Fn + spacebar activated the backlit keyboard.

                  I wasn't looking then.

  • Thanks for sharing your review!

Curious for anyone else's thoughts if they have received theirs already

  • A WORD OF WARNING
Whilst the price and specs look attractive, I am negging this deal only to attract attention so anyone ordering from Lenovo doesn't get caught by surprise if they don't receive their order for many weeks or months.
I ordered ThinkPad E595 (as per the recent deal) on 18 June. Shipment date was quoted as 3-6 July. I also received order confirmation with the expected shipment date 3 - 6 July.
However at the end of June Lenovo changed the expected delivery date to 21 September!!!
I got in touch with them but they keep saying that there is nothing they can do "due to parts shortage".
So guys, be aware and order at your own risk.

    • so have you received yours? might be in the same boat as you, mine suppose to be shipped yesterday but it is still the same haven't received any email

      • My laptop was originally meant to ship on the 10th July, and I have checked it just now and it says Expected to Ship 9th July. I ordered mine on June 19, 2020. What configuration did you order? Mine is 4700U and 16GB RAM.

        • Ideapad slim 5 15 16GB ram 4800U im mostly likely going to keep calling and see what is happening

          • @Digitalco: Oops just for clarification I got the Ideapad slim 5 14", I just got my shipping confirmation from Lenovo.

            • @dazzsser: oh damn hahaha i just got one too from Lenovo finally hoping it comes quick now

              • @Digitalco: I just had a look at it seems that the shipment will be on China Eastern flight MU737 from Shanghai to Melbourne. Do you know how the lockdown situation in Melbourne will affect this shipment?

                • +1

@dazzsser: i just received mine on Friday i have to say its pretty good.

                  • @Digitalco: My thoughts exactly! I like the build quality, feel and texture of the laptop. At first the screen was throwing me off a little, coming from an XPS 13, but I must say that because I don't do any photo editing the screen is fine for me. Really, I think this screen is fine for normal usage.

                    • @dazzsser: Yes the screen took time for me to adjust but have to say this is a good deal laptop but only problem i have is one a dead pixel in the middle of my screen which is getting fixed on Monday.

                  • @Digitalco: Which specs did you get (14" or 15")? Can you comment on how is it in a little bit detail? How's the battery life? Thanks.

                    • @Shahw: i got the 15 for the battery it last about 8- 9 hrs of light use browsing, streaming and YouTube which is pretty good.Build quality has a good feel on the hands and texture of the laptop has a good touch. At first the screen was bit off for me but got use it , coming from an older laptop.

                      • @Digitalco: Thanks @digitalco. I thought the battery might be going over 10 hours, but 8-9 hours is still pretty good. Ideapad 15 is not available anymore, and now I'm trying to decide between this and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549085. Heard that Thinkpad has great build quality but not sure though how does that compare to Ideapad.

                        • @Shahw: Ideapad has much premium design than the think pad. For my use the battery goes around that 8-9 hours but it might be different for other people. What are you going to use the laptop for anyways? i looked at the one you link here and it has good specs can't fault anything only problem is the shipping time.

                          • @Digitalco: My use might be similar to yours most of the time, i.e. browsing, Microsoft office, YouTubing mostly. You are right in terms of the design as Ideapad looks much better to eyes as compared to Thinkpad and it is better specs-wise too (250nits vs 300nits and 45W vs 57W). I was just concerned about the build quality that I might be compromising the build quality by going with Ideapad, but after talking to you, I think I'll go with Ideapad, thanks. Shipping time is definitely not very exciting though…
