Fishing Rod Buying Help

So, I live near a river where's there's golden perch and Murry Cod. I've seen them strike a few times on my walk and thought about giving it ago. Can anyone suggest a decent spinner rod and lures as baits hard to come by for around $50 for the rod. I've never use lures and always just used dads rod.

I'd suggest just buying a cheap rod and reel combo from Kmart or BCF as your first. If you enjoy it and really get into the hobby, then dish out for better gear.

    • I've done sea fishing plenty and enjoy it.

  • At the price point, they're all likely the same rod with different brands printed on them.

You won't get a rod that's ideal for a golden perch and a Murray cod as their size is too different. And good compromise is a 3-6kg rated rod. You'll still get good strikes on a golden perch and any cod you get out muscled by would probably be too large to legally keep.

If you're willing to stretch your budget, the Shimano Sienna with carbon rod (cheap Shimano private carbon rod) size 3000 with a 3-6kg rod rating would be a big step up. I bought a few years ago for about $70 for the combo. I still use them.

  • I’d recommend a 4-8 kg rod with 4000 reel so you can control them out of snags and in case you hookup on a big 80cm+ cod. Anaconda has a Shimano Sienna Quickfire 7' 4000 Spinning Combo 7 ft for $79 at the moment which is a decent starter kit then you will need 20 pound braid ( any cheap 4 strand from eBay or amazon) and good quality 15-25 pound fluorocarbon leader.
Also I recommend spinner bait lures as they are harder to snag on submerged trees.

    • Cheers that's the one I ended up getting.
