Looking for a New Video Editing Laptop

Hi all,

I am a video editor and unfortunately my Macbook 2012 (i7, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd) has been having some issues (fans going loud and crazy every few days, battery only last a few hours now and the 8gb ram is faulty too now and really struggles to use multiple apps). Not sure Apple can even fix it anymore, but keen to get a new video editing laptop. It’s ran pretty solid for the past 8 years so no complaints.

I’ll just be editing in HD for the most part, and occasionally 4K upon request. Budget is $2000 - $3500. I’m comfortable with both Apple and Microsoft OS.

Current top options:

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

  • Whats your editor of choice? Im thinking you use adobe otherwise there wouldn't be a need to look out side of the Mac OS. Personally I would go Mac, because premiere is still more stable on Mac than windows.

    • Thanks, I use Adobe Premiere Pro mostly. Stability is important, so I’ll definitely take that into consideration as well.

Desktops are more powerful for less money - so get that if possible.

    • Considering a desktop as well in the future, but sometimes I do need to show clients work on my laptop and they often like to see my editing timelines for any feedback/ changes. I would also consider a slightly weaker laptop and a stronger desktop, so I’ll look into that too.

That Mac is going to eat your video editing for breakfast. Even on my 2017 MacBook Pro 13 with 8gb, 1080p is easy to work with. Go the Mac.

    • Thanks, I was considering getting an even older Macbook Pro but I’ve been scammed before and I would prefer to buy from somewhere where I can also get warranty as well. I was hoping there would be even older refurbished macbook pros on the Apple website but they’re all pretty new from last year.

2012, 13” 16gb ram 1.25tb fusion drive Macbook Pro, mine still handles like a dream. But than again I use final cut… I believe is an i5.

      • Impressive, this is why I’m leaning towards Mac, I like the idea of having a laptop for a long time, at least 5 years. I keep hearing stories of some PC laptops crashing after a year or two which is what worries me, so warranty options are very important for my next laptop.

I will also note that mine is not a retina. I like being able to upgrade parts like ram and hard drives. I actually took out my CD drive and put an SSD in, than created a fusion drive with my SSHD.

          • @Apple96: I didn’t realise it was possible to upgrade apple parts like ram and hard drives, very good to know

    • How about running HackOS on a lappy with Ryzen 7 4800H and a discrete GPU (such as Dell G5 15 SE 2020 or Acer Predator Helios 300 2019) for half the price of the refurbished MBP?

Now, for Adobe use, yes a Mac Pro would suit, however i feel the value for money with Ryzen is way better value for money these days, especially with the ASUS line up.
The TUF A15 is good value for money, although made of plastic,
my pick would be a G17

    or
G14 if you need something more compact

In both cases you get around 6-6.5 hours of battery life.
A15 with the 90 watt hour battery should get 8-10 hours.

    • Thanks, those are some very nice specs and good value for money, so I will definitely look into these.

    • But screen has low srgb

On the A15 yes, but they have since released an updated version with a better screen.
The G14/G17 uses a better quality screen so unaffected.

    • Hey, I've noticed that all Aus websites have either removed any webpages or marked G14 Ryzen 9 as discontinued/EOL… and the lower end ones are less and less available.

      I wonder what's going on…
