[PS4] Sega Mega Drive Classics $17.95 @ PlayStation Store

980

In the 90s, any 20c coin i found would go towards trying to clock Streets of Rage. Never got there in the end, but goddamit i will now.

    • No art attack?

I want this so bad, and I'm almost certainly going to cave in and buy it even though I know I'll almost certainly never get around to playing most of the games, and won't even spend much time playing the few that do play. What is wrong with me?

    • +13

I literally downloaded 1000s of arcade and console games once. I don't think I played any for more than 3 minutes. The real thing doesn't compare to nostalgia.

      • +5

Yeah I have an rPi with mame, nes, snes, sega megadrive, neo geo, ps1, gameboy, gameboy advance, gameboy colour, c64, amiga, Daphne, atari 3x consoles plus more I have forgotten - like 65000 games.

I play them for 2mins and go, wow this kinda sucks. I would rather remember them from that time.

        • Did you build an arcdade? Just finished building a bartop arcade with all the above plus PC games too (Street Fighter 4 & 5 for example). Love it, just played Twin Cobra couple minutes ago…oh the memories.

          • @whorishmouth: Nah but I have proper madcatz arcade stick (arcade joystick and buttons) and plug into tv or monitor.

There are things that hold up for different people.

I've had a blast with people (perhaps also when drinking) playing through Bubble Bobble.

I've also played a bit of an Amiga game called Flood which is still fun.

X-Wing Alliance and the X-Wing games also held up for me.

Civ IV, from 15 years ago is still my favourite Civ.

        • Bubble Bobble and Snow Bros have held up well. Basically the arcade games which have never been improved upon.

Anything that has been improved upon, like driving games, are pretty naff. Going back and playing Pole Position basically sucks.

Just having Streets of Rage and Golden Axe series are already worth the price in my opinion.

    • The arcade versions are great games, the MD versions not so much imo

  • +2

I wonder if games like this will be able to be played on the PS5

  • +5

Super nostalgia. If only it had Jurassic Park.

  • +4

The new Streets of Rage is super nostalgic and fun to play

  • Streets of rage wasn't an arcade, sure not thinking of Final Fight?

    • +1

Apparently there was an arcade cabinet port. I think it was basically just the Mega Drive version stuck into an arcade cabinet.

      https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Streets_of_Rage/Versions

      • Interesting, never seen that

        • Yeah, I think those Mega Tech / Mega Play cabinets were basically just Mega Drives on the inside which could take a few cartridges so you could have several games in the one cabinet. There was something similar that SNK did with Neo Geo, the difference being that the Neo Geo was streets ahead of any other console out there at the time, and the hardware and software were so expensive that for most people the arcade cabinets were the only way to play them. Mega Drive and its games were relatively affordable so there was much less incentive to shovel coins into an arcade cabinet to play them, and therefore the cabinets themselves were pretty rare.

VR support as well (albeit I think it's pretty limited)

  • Awesome. Been reminiscing about playing Gain Ground and was wondering how I'd be able to play it again.

  • +1

Is this the version that has terrible input lag?

    • +1

A couple of the games do apparently, but I didn't really notice, so I can't remember which ones do except one or more of the Streets of Rage games which seemed to chug a bit. Depends on how picky and hardcore you are about it.

  • No Battle Toads?? :-(

    • +1

the IP is owned by rare, no chance of seeing it on ps / nintendo :(

  • other than Sonic I haven't played any of the other games… where did my childhood go?

  • So Space Harrier II in VR? I've kinda gotta see this..!

  • +1

Anyone know if it allows couch co-op?
Says 1-2 players, not sure if thats referring to online multiplayer only

    • +1

Said 1-2 local and 2v2 network on the game page on the PS4

  • +1

Thanks OP bought it just need to get a ps4 console now. lol

  • All we need now is Pepsiman on PS4.

  • I've been hoping for ages for this to become a PS+ monthly freebie. Will have to pull the pin on this instead….

    • +1

Don't worry. It will become a freebie now not long after we buy it.. Like most of them :(

  • +1

From memory it was $49.95 when it first came out. I got it on sale for $29.95 which is still a little high.

    But for $17.95 it's a bargain.

The interface gets on your nerves real quick. But for the games, its great.

    • I liked the interface and presentation, thought it was great being based in a bedroom, and selecting the games off a shelf.

  • A lot of us may have the Steam base platform of this from a while ago (where a couple of games were included). I bought this on XBOne then returned it after realizing I had this, then just bought the only game I was really nostalgic over - ESWAT: City Under Siege for a couple of bucks… played it twice /sigh
I watched a youtube playthrough of Altered Beast - I remember it being much more difficult than it made it look!

  • Just emulate this…..

got my vote for the description

This is an easy Platinum trophy - for those into that.

I wanted this as a physical media when it goes cheap, but I will bite at this price for digital.

    Cheers OP
