Groupon Deal Changed Shipping Cost after Purchase

So back in end of March, I bought a 2x canvas deal from Groupon which expires 30th June. At the time, shipping cost quoted for both was $14.90. Created my pictures today (yes I'm last minute) and shipping came out to $40. I did the Groupon deal and now they have put in this:

Two Canvas 40x30cm: $14.90
• Important Note: The above shipping &
handling fees were verified on 12/02/2020.
Due to increased pressure on global delivery
networks at this time, they temporarily do
not apply and, instead, the standard
shipping cost for all items within this deal is
currently $40

That was not there when I bought it as I am quite a stickler in reading all the "fine print" before buying vouchers. This has changed the cost of my purchase from $38 to $63! There were certainly many other cheaper options at the time and I wouldn't have bought it anyway if it was going to cost me $63. Unfortunately I don't have a snap of the page when I bought it. Do I have any recourse in getting a refund on this? Can someone throw me any phrases I can use to push them into giving me a refund (or a credit even).

Thanks in advance, I wanted to post this before trying to contact them as I only have a short availability to contact them today and i wanted to get my info sorted before the call!

Either cancel the sale, pay the extra or ask for the original postage price.

    Which do you want?

Bluff them and tell them you have a screenshot of the original purchase T&Cs then ask for a refund.

    • No dice, they still said it was past their return policy and they could only give me a 180 day credit.

You have all the info you need already in your OP (Important Note). Contact their support stating that you find the reasoning unethical, and that you would never have purchased it, had the shipping been $40.

Keep it simple (no emotion, no need to elaborate on the fact you would have purchased elsewhere, etc.), and clearly state what you want (shipped for the original price, or a refund). Whether they do anything about it is up to Groupon.

Yeah, the CS was pretty short with me and said either 'choose something within the deal (couldnt confirm if the $40 shipping still applied) or take the credit. I took the credit as its expiring tomorrow and didnt want to risk it expiring then they will definitely just say, too bad so sad. Wonder if theres an escalations email address

    you're getting scammed

Sounds like they weren't making any money on the deal so tried to factor in costs another way. I don't see how shipping and handling fees have fluctuated during these times. They're one of the few things that remain constant. You'll just end up waiting longer.

    • Yup, I doubt shipping companies have actually upped the cost so not sure how they could justify such an increase, ridiculous.

Take this up with Groupon, have screenshots. Good luck!

  • Update : unfortunately not able to get a refund as the '7 day return policy' elapsed even though I said it shouldnt apply in the situation. I only had the option of 'choose another option in the deal (could not confirm if the $40 shipping still applied) or a 180 Groupon credit.

Me : i would rather pay for the original shipping cost, or have an actual refund, not a credit
CS: Let me check on that
Me : this was changed after i purchased the deal, which i wouldnt have bought it if i have seen it
CS: Unfortunately, as the 7 working day cancellation period has elapsed, I am unable to process a cash refund for your Groupon.
CS: If you prefer I can process refund in credits
CS: Karen, just checking, are you still there?
Me : as groupon have actually changed the terms of the deal, i would say it is fair that the 7 day does not apply
Me : i have a screenshot of the original deal where the note is not there
CS: I understand that this isn't your preferred resolution. However, we've provided all of the resolutions available under the current circumstances, and while I'm happy to answer any questions you may have regarding other purchases, I'm not able to issue a refund to your original form of payment.

Lesson learnt - Groupon is able to change the T&C's after purchase. Once I have used the credit, definitely striking them off my list!

      1. Is your name actually Karen!? At least this request was reasonable.
      2. i'd take the credit and call it a day.
      • Haha woops, missed that one! Yeah I took the credit, but had a look at the site and theres actually nothing to get in the locals (not going to go for goods after this). They even have up restaurants that aren't opened yet. Hopefully something good comes out within the next few months. I wouldnt have minded if they increased postage by $5 but nearly triple was taking the piss.
