Rental Car One Way Melbourne to Sydney

I am looking for information re the hiring of a car soon for a one way return journey Melbourne to Sydney.
I have been told that companies often do hire cars for one way trips when they need cars in another city.
I am returning home to Sydney after completing my 6 month work contract in Melbourne.
Helpful advice would be appreciated or any good rental car deals.

  • Trick with the Big hire companies (Thrifty, Budget, Avis and Hertz etc)
Hire the car from a company owned site (Airports and City locations usually) as they share their fleet across states
if you hire from a franchised location they will charge you a hefty one way fee to cover the cost of sending a truck to collect the car from the other city.
company owned sites may often charge a one way fee but it will be far more reasonable an amount.

Might be worth looking at Spaceship rentals. They're campers and cars with no one way fees. The increased daily rate might offset the high one way fees many agencies charge

Your relocation rentals can be found on

    Imoova

The sort of thing I think you're looking for is

    https://www.transfercar.com.au/

    or

    https://www.imoova.com/imoova/relocations

where you get a considerable discount to take a car from where it's not needed, to where it is.

Tansfercar seems to be wanting to move cars from Syd to Melb, not the other way around. Imoova seems to have plenty of Mel-Syd options

I haven't used either service myself to know of any pitfuls.

    Isnt a flight like $79?

  • Train ? or do you have too much stuff to carry?

  • Jucy got some deals from Sydney to Melbourne atm, but they change pretty often so keep looking.

  • Thank you for the suggestions. I will follow these up. I have a lot of stuff so need to go by car.

    • also compare with different pick up and return locations.
the fee can be different for different locations
