Apple TV and HEVC 10bit H265 Playback

Hi, we have an Apple TV 4 with the infuse app for video playback. The playback is smooth in most cases except when playing back H265 10bit HEVC files. Just looking for feedback if anyone has success with these files? Would an Apple TV 4k experience the same issue?

Thanks

No issues playing 4K UHD 10-bit HDR HEVC content on Apple TV 4K (via Plex)

    • Thanks mate. So without the Apple TV 4k, anyway I can improve the Apple TV 4 for a smoother playback?

      • Can you try Plex and then try direct play vs transcode?

My AppleTV 4K direct plays from Plex H265 HEVC files - no issues! This is the reason I got it. However, I reckon the AppleTV 4 lacks the codecs so therefore may need to be transcoded.

        Where is the media stored?

        • The source media files are located in a synology NAS and I am sharing these files to the Apple TV. The app that is used to play the video is Infuse Pro.
          I don't use plex however.

        • Hi mate, are those 10bit HEVC H265 files that you are playing with AppleTV 4K? I read that "10bit" is one of the factor that many media players stutter.

          • @jeeg: ATV4K plays 10bit. No problem.

Is the Synology NAS the issue here. I mean, ATV4, does not support 10bit, as far as I'm aware. This will cause the NAS to downscale the files. Can the NAS keep up - does it have enough processor power? Alternatively, the ATV4 may be the one struggling to play the files.

            • @o53djz7qTPY4der: With Infuse afaik Infuse does all the work. The Synology just shares the files. Different to how plex works with the transcoding done at the source when needed.

              • @Grubsy:

With Infuse afaik Infuse does all the work

I'd suggest this is an ATV4 software/hardware limitation or issue then.

            • @o53djz7qTPY4der: Thanks mate. Looks like i will have to get the ATV 4K. Just waiting for confirmation from bunnikins on the reply below to see if his 4K ATV also have issues with the files or did I misunderstand.

ATV 4K is $270 for the 64GB ones. Would it be fine to get the cheaper 32GB ones? I don't play games and the ATV is mainly for watching netflix, prime and infuse.

  • Just a thought to fault find a bit more.

Do HEIC videos work on the aTV in the photos app?

If they stutter it’s most likely an aTV issue.

If It’s smooth it’s an Infuse issue and contact FireCore to fix.

    • I am not sure how to play the HEVC using the photo app on the ATV4. On the ATV infuse app, sometimes it play fine, sometimes it stutter and then recover, sometimes i can only hear voice while the image is stand still. it is quite unpredictable.

  • Connected via WiFi or Ethernet? Just a thought

    • connect via ethernet.

  • I have the same issue on my infuse. I just do not download HEVC H.265 content for that reason :(

    • Yes I know what u mean. Sometimes the source media are just not available in non HEvC H265. Do you also use the ATV 4?

      • Apple TV 4K

        • Thanks mate. so are you saying your Apple TV 4K has the same issues on your infuse?

          • @jeeg: Yeah same issues with H.265 content. Its a Hit and Miss.

Hey guys, just thought I will update here to say that I received my Apple TV 4k (redeemed via flybuys) and watching HEVC H265 10bit is no issues at all. Smooth as butter!
